History of Daman and Diu

The name Daman is probably taken from the Daman Ganga River, while Diu is from the Sanskrit word 'dvipa' that means island. From Mauryan times (4th-2nd century BCE), both were subject to numerous local and regional power ruling in the western part of the country. The history of both places dates back to more than a thousand years. From the 8th to 13th century, the region was the part of Goa was a stronghold of the Chowda Rajputs who were ousted by the Waghala. Waghalas was expelled by Muslims in 1330. Muslim rule continued for two hundred years till it was conquered by the Portuguese.  During the 16th century, it was a part of Goa that came under the rule of Portuguese. The Portuguese ruled Goa for 451 years (1510-1961).

On 16 December 1961, Operation Vijay was initiated to end the colonial rule. The different land blocks on the west coast of India, Daman, Diu, and Goa decided to form one political unit after liberation. In 1987, when Goa became a fully-fledged stage, Daman and Diu became a separated Union Territory.
