The human body is designed to have millions of follicles or small sacs lining the skin that generate hair or the colour pigment cells that contain the type of melanin, i.e. eumelanin. In white people, it can start as early as 20 years old, while a person can be as young as 25 years old among Asians, and 30 years in African-Americans populations.
  • Oxidative stress: A key problem that can lead to many diseases including Alzheimer’s is oxidative stress which is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. The free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules with an uneven number of electrons and when antioxidants are not enough to counteract the damaging effects of free radicals, it leads to ageing and disease.
  • Medical Conditions: From autoimmune diseases to thyroid disorders, there are various medical conditions which may increase a person’s risk for greying early. White hair is also common in alopecia areata, an autoimmune skin condition that causes hair loss on the scalp, face and other parts of the body. When the hair grows back, it tends to be white due to melanin deficiency.
  • Real-life stressors: Stress is an inevitable part of our life. What are real-life stressors? Well, they are the conditions which can cause extreme stress. It can anything, from the death of the loved ones to divorce, to loss of a job, it may lead the hair to become white prematurely. However, studies have not conclusively proved this.
  • Smoking: Smoking affects the body in different ways. It restricts the blood flow to the hair follicles and causes hair loss. Smokers have higher chances of having grey hair at the age of 30 than the non-smokers according to a study conducted in 2013. The toxins in the cigarettes cause the damaging of the hair follicles.
  • Chemical hair dyes and hair products: Does colouring causes the hair to get grey? Well, it is true that it makes your hair dull and vulnerable to damage, but they are also a major reason for the grey hair. The chemical hair dyes and hair products, even shampoos contain harmful ingredients that decrease melanin. While hair dyes have a key ingredient of Hydrogen peroxide, which is in many hair dyes, is one such harmful chemical. Excessive use of products that beach hair will also eventually cause it to turn white.

If genetics or ageing are causing the grey hair, there is no effective way to prevent or reverse the process. However, it can be treated if other factors are causing the premature greying of the hair.
