LAWS FOR WORKING WOMEN TO LIBERATE MYTHS

Negating the fact that women in India have successfully come a long way regardless of the stereotypical societal pressures and barriers, the discrimination at work hasn’t yet moved out of the picture.

And the knowledgeable have stated well that a major part of being literate is to be well aware of your legal rights and the laws related to you. And if you are looking to ensure that you are treated without bias at your workplace, this is the time to be fully up-to-date with your rights as an employee;

Here is a list of laws that protects women in India at their workplace, no matter what industry you are associated with;

  1. The Remuneration Act: in a corporate setup, every employee is entitled to equal pay, no matter what gender they are. There is a set scale followed for each level of employee and all the employees serving the level are paid equally. There cannot be discrimination followed at the workplace depending on what gender you are or even at the time of recruitment, this is against the ‘Equal Remuneration Act, 1976.’
  2. Sexual Harassment: There is a clear Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act that came to power in 2013 that states and provides rights to women that prevent any nature of physically unnatural activity against their will at work. Each company on mandatory terms is required to have a compliance cell that takes care of Sexual harassment issues of the female employees and gives them a provision to complain if need be.

The act includes an offence taken on activities like any unwanted contact made physically of an uncomfortable nature or against the will, demanding or pleading sexual favours in return for something or otherwise, an act of showing pornography or any other manner of action that isn’t welcome. The cell is required to take immediate and stringent actions against such acts at work and the female employee has the right to demand the details of their actions on this act in writing from the company’s cell. Several other segments are covered in this act that can be always researched and understood if required.

     3. The Factories Act, 1948: This act helps the female working community in securing their rights towards health, leave benefits, safety, welfare and the right working hours. This regulation takes care of many things in their concern as stated below;

  • The working hours for an employee are fixed and if the employee is expected to work beyond the working hours, they are entitled to be paid extra for the same.
  • The female employees are entitled to breaks between their working schedules; these resting periods during the day in regularity cannot be taken away. The employee is also entitled to weekly off and annual leaves.
  • The number of shifts that are undertaken by the female employee cannot be increased beyond a certain limit and no employee can be demanded to work after 7 pm or before 6 am. If the company is looking to change the work timing of the female employee, they must notify 24 hours before the change
  • The female employees are rightfully entitled to basic utilities that concern the privacy of women at work, separately.

      4. Maternity Act: The Maternity Benefit Amendment Act, 2017 states that all the women working with a company are entitled to a leave of 26 weeks during the time of pregnancy. There also is a provision of pre-natal leaves that can be increased to a span of 2 months. The duration of this leave only is decreased if the mother is having a third child, this leave helps cover the entire process for women through her pre-delivery and post-delivery period ensuring that her child receives proper nutrition and attention from the mother.

The women today in our country are remarkably changing the world with their presence and expert inputs in different fields. To ensure that the social and economic presence is celebrated and encouraged independently, the government has taken several initiatives from time to time and implemented different laws for the betterment and unbiased culture of the work environment for women.

SUMMER ATTIRE, PICKING THE IDEAL OUTFIT

Yashasvi Khushu || The CEO Magazine

Even though the summer comes with its own set of heatwaves and sweat, we all crave for his season.

Because regardless of the hiccups it does give us an ideal opportunity to flaunt our favourite summer outfits that have been kept neatly stacked in our wardrobes for months now and oh how we missed the less baggy versions of us and the sweet sunlight on the windows.

The days have gone where we have to be sitting tied up in our blankets glooming and lazing over a hot cup of coffee in a million layers of sweaters. We no more have to hide away, locked in our houses trying to stay warm embracing the anti-social in us. Now is the time to step out, do those long-awaited meetups with your loved ones, walk on the beach, stroll out for an evening coffee or have that special rooftop date.

 Now that finally the warmth has invaded are lazy shelled afternoons, it is going to stay back for a while and this is just the time to dust the shelves of the drawers, take out the best collection of your summer dresses and clean them up. These summer dresses won’t just enhance the looks that you have kept wrapped in the drapes forever now but also help you feel breezy and move around freely to experiment with the way you look. And if you feel there aren’t enough or any dresses that you have to match your aura, get up and get shopping.

Here are a few tips to understand how summer shopping can prove to be one of the best experiences;

EVENT: You may end up having a mammoth number of chic dresses all stacked up neatly in your wardrobe but the fact remains that not all your dresses are suitable commonly for all the occasions. Each dress that you own will have its own pace, time, occasion, event or place to be worn. Of course, we all buy dresses that are from the pack of classics, they will be suitable for all the occasions regardless of where or with who you are, but then such dresses are very few in number.

And at the same time, there would be clothes that are not even suitable to wear to bed, those are just bad choices we moan over later. So to make sure that you don’t have to get through such hits and misses, you always buy clothes that are fairly suitable in at least multiple occasions if not all. This nature of shopping will not just help you buy the right clothes but would also keep you sorted and comfortable in your attire.

BODY FITTING: One of the major factors that are to be kept in mind while shopping is the body shape, curves and lines. Not all clothes suit all body shapes, it isn’t necessary that if something looks really good on your friend, it would suit your body as well, you could always give it a pass. It ould be anything, a bodycon, flares, maxi dresses, florals, block colours etc. if you make a choice wisely, it will prove just right for you.

DESIGNS: A very crucial aspect of the design of the attire is the kind of prints and colours we pick and this can be played very smartly with. We all have our set of favourites, some people like neutrals like maroon, beige, blues, olive, etc because they are suitable for all the occasions, then there are colours like yellows, oranges, peach, greens etc that people like to experiment and see if they can carry or not. And when we focus on prints, it has got a lot to do with where are you planning to wear it, florals go very well with day parties. If you are going to a formal event, pick stripes and for a lasting impact, solid colours are a win-win at night.

BLING:  One of the most essential things to do while you have finally decided on the attire that would go with your occasion is to find the right accessory to go with it. One of the most essential things to do is to accessorize your look if you want to enhance your appearance. Innumerable on various occasions people have completely underestimated the need to bling themselves (and not literally) without realising the importance of it for your ideal look.

Once you have bought all these aspects in place, you will by the end of the day understand that you are in a safe ground. You have a perfect balance and blend of design, pattern, material, accessory and vibe.

EVOLVING WOMEN IN THE GLOBALIZED DEVELOPING NATIONS

In a plethora of ways, around the world globalization has intensified the integration process and impacted several aspects in the due course. After the globalization taking its charge, the world has turned into a massive global village.

There are multifarious aspects like political, social, cultural, economic, etc that have manifested themselves through this incorporation at an international level. There are a number of aspects that have amplified the scenario of innovation by the process of providing a platform of opportunities and multiplying the competition. This helps in connecting various countries to each other through interested individuals and fill in for the needs that are otherwise hard to meet.

But between this international hustle and will to bring change on a global level, there is one aspect that is majorly being ignored and that is gender equality. One of the most talked-about topic on most of the popular international platforms and neglected on the grass-root level. The patriarchy and the system has for long avoided this topic of debate and not given ample importance to women, the time has come to put across that any change that takes place on a global level impacts all, regardless of what gender you belong to and globalization has ensured to put this topic on the table by encouraging positive developments.

Here are few positive changes for women that have entered the scenario after globalization took over on the developing countries in terms of making their economic status better;

  1. The opportunities have increased and the world market has opened up. Once the process of globalization is initiated, a number of companies around the world get the opportunity to commence investments in different countries and add to the benefit of the domestic market. These investments don’t just amplify the cash flow but also multiply the employment opportunities for all.

Opportunity to benefit from this situation is equally divided between the genders by boosting the economic activities and amplifying the level of competition for all. It opens up new windows for women in a manner that they get to showcase their potential and outdo their male counterparts which in any other situation is exploited and requires more struggle.

  1. The labour participation is increased, women in terms of the population have domination around the world and once we start to involve them in jobs and activities around the world, their participation of labour automatically increases making the product better. Though there are several things can potentially be a barrier against their participation in economic growth. The global market is looking forward to revamping the flexibility of the market scenario and the existing ways of working as well. The way of treating preferentially has started to waver away; the rise in completion has compelled the employers to pool out as much benefit as possible from all the genders.
  1. Access to the market has increased with time. The world markets can be accessed far more easily now by individuals to make sure that all bits of potential are being utilized in the right areas where it is valued. This process ensures breaking shackles and removing barriers in a number of ways which does not just boil down to employment, but also accesses the amenities needed for basic requirements at economical prices.
  1. The growth in the sector is visible as well, the participation of females has boosted in various ventures on domestic and international levels. The expectation level and the intensity of involvement also has increased after the incorporation of females in the industrial platform operations, rather than just being a part of the environment at home, successfully attempting to channel their skills of entrepreneurship and talents at an international level.
  1. The standard of living has gotten much better with time; globalization has impacted and improved it on large grounds. This is one of the major factors that can make the female gender economically independent once they have learned well to benefit from this scenario.

To keep it short and simple, the positive light that has shined upon the developing countries after the incorporation of globalization has reflected on a positive outlook for the pinned down segment of the society. There are a lot of communalism traits that can be confronted on gender bias that is evident in the society today, but the women around here have learned to outdo it, even though the learning came the hard way it bought with itself the befits of a better tomorrow full of significantly high potential and more prospects.

7 TIPS FOR WOMEN TO TAKE THE LEAD OF SOVEREIGNTY

“If I hadn’t had mentors, I wouldn’t be here today. I’m a product of great mentoring; great coaching… coaches or mentors are very important”

Indra Nooyi, CEO, PepsiCo

When we throw light on the women leaders around the world, the most iconic faces like Hillary, Malala, Aung San Suu Kyi, Indra Nooyi, Janet Yellen, etc. come to the mind instantly. We no longer live in an age where men dominated the society, women leaders today have succeeded in breaking the stereotypical shackles efficiently.

The one thing that you would find common in all these women leaders is what they have learned from their experiences and how they have utilized the same knowledge to develop successful strategies to develop opportunities out of a hurdle. It takes a mammoth amount of commitment, passion, leadership experience and most of all mentoring to gain and refine your skills.

The art of mentoring should be taken seriously since it demands you to share guidance; it will keep your thinking process rust free. Here are few tips and tricks to ponder on before you decide to take the leap of faith;

  1. Get as much clarity as you can get on what your motive is to start mentoring. This is one topic that would overshadow everything in the long run. If you do not have the clarity on why have you started our as a mentor then the best option is to go back and rethink this idea of trying to acquire the best leadership skills. Having the quality and skill is not going to be enough, you will also have to care about the people and how would they reach their desired goal. And hence, having clarity on the question we started from is a must and only then you would be able to make a significant difference.
  2. Make a list of all your goals. There is a massive difference between making a decision to become a mentor and chalking out a plan to become one for it to happen. If you are looking to be a successful mentor, the very first thing that you will have to develop would be a purpose and that can be achieved by following the simple thumb rule ‘SMART’. ‘SMART’ signifies smart, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Make yourself a diary or a journal where you can chalk down your to-do lists or plans for the next 10 days or a month and accordingly take your plans forward. Once you start maintaining a diary you will realize the massive difference that it adds in the race to succeed.
  3. Start from the young minds, you will come across several groups, just out of the foster care, schools, colleges, etc. that are looking for mentors. Then there are other places to explore if you want to take it up a notch with new supervisors, women at the workplace, office staff, entrepreneurs, and women looking to go to work and more, choose a group you feel you can easily relate to and make the maximum impact.
  4. The way you think makes a difference as well, so try and be as much open-minded as possible for you, maybe more. Do not be biased or judgemental about the past of anyone; this can affect the relationship potential of you and the one who looks up to you.
  5. Do a lot of research, rely on data. Whatever group or agency you are looking to mentor, read a lot about them, their services, products, nature, history, etc. seek more opportunities that you can introduce them to, comprehend their needs and accordingly suggest them a plan.
  6. Keep all the possible challenges in mind, do not feel scared, push your limitations and you will see the wonders you can do. Remember the diary you made, go through your plans one more time and overcome all the hurdles that stand in front of you.
  7. Keep a balance maintained at all times, no matter what nature of the relationship you are building, it would require time. Every good mentor has excelled in relationships only because they gave it the time it needed. Sharpening the skills of being a good listener can prove to be a boon in this scenario, listen to the problems, analyze them and only after ample contemplation come to a conclusion.

If you have successfully managed to follow all these steps, there is no way you would not achieve the right balance of mentorship you were seeking. This is just the ideal time to make the move and walk on the path to guide others towards their set goals, help them succeed and make a difference. There is no time like now to start exploring the woman-leader inside you.
