SDSU Study Abroad Programme

January 04, 2020 – January 16, 2020

Students from the San Diego State University, Californiaarrived in India on January 04, 2020. Following a trip to Agra and Delhi, they arrived at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar (XUB) on January 08, 2020. The next day started off with a campus tour by the students’ team of International Relations Committee (IRC), XUB. This was followed by a welcome session that saw opening remarks by Prof.SutapaPati (Dean, Xavier School of Sustainability (XSoS)).Dr. Zohir Chowdhury (Associate Professor, School of Public Health, SDSU) addressed the students about the SDSU Study Abroad Programme and the partnership between SDSU and XUB. A welcome address was delivered by Prof.Fr. E.A. Augustine, S.J. (Registrar, XUB), who also spoke about the role of Jesuits in higher education. The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Prof. Elizabeth Abba (Associate Professor and Associate Dean, IRC, XUB).

Post the session, the visiting students interacted with students from IRC as well as with students pursuing MBA in Sustainability Management from XSOS. The students then attended a session describing the culture of India and Odisha, followed by a session on Air Quality Monitoring by Dr. Zohir Chowdhury. The day concluded with a cricket match and a welcome dinner.

On January 10, 2020 the students attended a session on Sustainable Behaviour by Dr. Fr. Antony R Uvari, S.J.(Vice Chancellor, Xavier University, Bhubaneswar). Post this, the students witnessed a session on Geospatial Applications in Sustainability by Prof Vikrant Patil (Associate Professor, XSoS) and a session on Public Health by Dr. Sandeep Kumar (SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar). The day wrapped up with a yoga session, wherein the students participated with zeal.

The University has planned for a lot of activities and interactive sessions in the days to come. The students will be visiting EkamaraHaat for shopping, Dhauli for sightseeing and light show, Raghurajpur to learn about Patachitra/Palm Painting, among other places, before proceeding to Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB). At the XIMB campus, the students will be a part of various sessions and will also continue their visit to various places that showcase the culture and heritage of Odisha. The trip will end with a Cultural Night on January 15, 2020, post which the students will return to SDSU.

The visiting students have settled in and are participating in various events quite passionately. This initiative has given students from different backgrounds an opportunity to gain insights into various cultures that are prevalent around the world.

Norwegian Cruise Line becomes the first major global cruise company to eliminate single-use plastic beverage bottles across the fleet

Norwegian Cruise Line, the innovator in global cruise travel with a 53-year history of breaking boundaries, is now a single-use plastic beverage bottle free across its fleet.  The brand announced last year that it partnered with JUST® Goods, Inc., which enabled the Cruise Line to replace all single-use plastic water bottles across its 17-ship fleet, beginning with its most recent ship, Norwegian Encore.

The achievement is one of the latest sustainable steps forward for the Norwegian Cruise Line. In 2018, the Company eliminated single-use plastic straws across its fleet and private destinations, and as a result of this most recent initiative, it will replace over six million single-use plastic water bottles every year. In addition, the brand is working to eliminate single-use plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles later this year. SHARED ELECTRIC SCOOTERS TO BE EQUIPPED WITH LICENSE PLATES AND HELMETS

Tel Aviv becomes the first city in the world to require all shared electric scooters for hire to be equipped with license plates and helmets 

The Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality has issued new regulations for shared electric scooter companies in order to keep pedestrians and riders safe. The new regulations include equipping electric scooters with helmets, installing license plates, recycling used batteries, lowering the speed of the scooters in certain areas, and preventing the usage of scooters in restricted areas. The regulations enforced by the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality are unprecedented and are meant to set an example for other municipalities around the world who are dealing with similar circumstances.

In August 2019, the municipality embarked on a pilot to regulate companies that were renting out electric scooters in the city. These companies had been subjected to a number of conditions and restrictions in order to obtain a permit to operate in the city, which included ensuring availability throughout the city, limiting the maximum number of scooters per company to 2,500 units, allowing parking only in designated areas which have to be marked in the companies’ apps, preventing usage by minors, implementing and activating a service call center, and banning the scooters’ alarms during the night-time.

Looking ahead to 2020, the municipality has decided to continue with this pilot, adding additional terms and restrictions with the purpose of increasing road safety and maintaining public order in the future.

Meital Lehavi, Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo for Transportation: “Our main goal is to keep sidewalks as a safe space for walking, as the city’s sidewalks are designed primarily for pedestrians. Tel Aviv is a very walkable city and we encourage people to take advantage of the city’s small size, flat topography and over 300 days of sunshine a year.”

Below are additional rules for shared scooters, in public areas, that will take effect in 2020:

Wearing Helmets

The Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality recognizes the importance of wearing helmets to keep riders safe and to reduce the chances of serious injuries. As a result of research, work, and consultation with relevant authorities, the municipality has decided that companies renting out electric scooters in the city must attach helmets to their electrical scooters. Given the complexity of implementing this task, the deadline for achieving this goal is June 15, 2020.

Restricted Travelling Areas

Electrical scooters will not be allowed in pedestrian-only zones (for example the wooden deck at the Tel Aviv Port). Furthermore, scooters will automatically be shut down when entering these areas. This regulation will be implemented by February 1, 2020.

Traffic Moderating Areas

The speed of electric scooters will automatically be limited to 15 km/h in areas where the municipality has detected a high volume of friction between pedestrians and scooter riders. This regulation will be implemented by February 1, 2020.

License Plates

Companies that rent scooters in Tel Aviv are required to put a license plate on all their scooters. In addition, and in order to eradicate the phenomenon of riding scooters on the sidewalks, the municipality will allow the general public to use the collaborative municipal 106 apps to report users riding on the sidewalk. This regulation will be implemented by January 1, 2020.

Parking in Restricted Areas

The municipality is expanding the areas where scooters will be prohibited outside of designated parking spaces. Another 180 parking spaces were marked around the city along with the approximately 220 existing designated parking spaces. Users will not be able to end their ride nor lock the scooters outside the designated parking spaces. This regulation will be implemented by January 1, 2020.

Recyclable Battery

The municipality will require the shared electric scooter companies to recycle the batteries of discontinued scooters in order to prevent the harmful environmental impact of e-waste. This regulation will be implemented by January 1, 2020.

Parul University held its 3rd Annual Convocation Ceremony on November 29, 2019. Padma Shri.Anil Kumble, Former Indian Cricketer, Captain and Coach of the Indian Cricket Team attended the ceremony as the Chief Guest while Miss. Manushi Chhillar, Former Miss World remained present along with Dr.Devanshu Patel, President, Parul University, Dr.M.N.Patel, Provost, Parul University, Dr.H.S.Vijayakumar, Registrar, Parul University, Hon’ble Members of the Board of Management and the Governing Body.  A total of 4,500 students along with their parents were present to witness the conferment of the degrees on their wards.

During the 3rd Convocation, a total of 3,519 graduating candidates from the disciplines of engineering and technology, applied science, commerce, fine arts, library science, health administration, public health, vocational studies, pharmacy, physiotherapy, ayurved, computer applications, management, business administration were conferred diploma, under graduate and post graduate degrees. A total of 40 gold medals along with 19 Certificates of Merit were awarded to the top performers of respective degree programmes in the university. A Ph.D degree in the discipline of ayurved was conferred upon Dr. Jyoti Kumbar. University, in recognition of contribution made by Padma Shri.Anil Kumble in the field of Cricket and by Miss Manushi Chhillar in the field of women empowerment and her efforts in making “ Anemia Free Haryana” Campaign successful, Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree was conferred on both of them.

Nirmal Mangroliya, a Gold Medal Awardee in M.Plan degree programme, spoke about his 7 seven years spent during B.Arch and M.Plan degree programme adding that the skills and knowledge gained by him at Parul University not only helped him become a better architect but also provided him adequate exposure and life skills required in leading a successful life. He is currently employed as an Assistant Professor in Parul Institute of Architecture and Research, a constituent institute of Parul University and also working on residential projects in Surat.

Preksha Chajjar, a top performer in Public Health programme in the university, said” I was looking forward to this day with great anticipation and excitement. Two years i have spent at Parul University are the most memorable years of my life. Practical exposure i gained during public health programme here will definitely work wonders in my professional career.”

Dr.Devanshu Patel, during his presidential remarks, told students that the knowledge gained by them in the classrooms and also by performing practicals in the laboratories, projects on which they worked along with their classmates and the thesis and the dissertation which the students worked on were merely tools in acquiring and enhancing their knowledge. The process of education has not ended by acquisition of the degree. Now, they will have to be ready to face challenges in their day-to-day life and the knowledge gained will enable them to brave the storms. He said that there is nothing wrong in dreaming big but overnight success is a myth. One has to toil day and night to achieve success and even work harder to sustain it. He appealed to the youth to channelize their energy and potential in solving the problems faced by the society and the nation at large.

Manushi Chhilar in her address urged the students to be happy, no matter whatever the circumstances may be and devote themselves entirely to better the conditions and surroundings in which they find themselves. She also said that India, being the only country with the highest population of youth, has the advantage of contributing to the nation’s development and progress.  She also shared an advice her parents gave her that no matter what you do in life, do it with utmost sincerity and never lose touch with one’s roots and be humble.

Padma Shri.Anil Kumble in his convocation address urged the students not to lose sight of their goals. He said that when he started out, everyone told him that he cannot play for India for long. He proved them wrong by perfecting his art with dedication and practice. He said, ” self-belief is the key to success. If you believe in yourself, you can sail easily through adverse circumstances, shattering failures and harsh criticisms.” He also said that he is known as a bowler who has taken 690 wickets but nobody knows it took him 40,000 deliveries to achieve this feat.

Dr.M.N.Patel, Provost, Parul University thanked all the students, parents and staff members for making this event a huge success and also congratulated the graduating candidates and wished them luck in their future endeavours.

Clearwater Analytics, a global SaaS solution provider, today announced the commencement of its India operations with a new office at Noida. The India office is the financial technology company’s second development center in addition to its Boise, Idaho, USA headquarters and will play a strategic role from the Asia-Pacific region.

Through this extended partnership, Vistara renews its contract for the full Altéa suite of solutions, including inventory, reservation, ticketing and departure control systems. Amadeus’ technology supports Vistara’s international expansion plans, including optimization of several areas of the business including passenger services, revenue management and payments.

Vistara has also renewed and strengthened its distribution agreement with Amadeus ensuring worldwide distribution of a full range of the airline’s content and fares to Amadeus-connected travel sellers. This is part of Amadeus’ key commitment to India and our long-term vision for the country and broader Asia-Pacific market.

The airline has been growing at nearly double the rate of the aggregate market growth, setting itself apart from its competition and on track to be a leading airline in India.  Aiming to expand its footprint through 2023, last year Vistara placed firm orders worth $3.1 billion at list prices with Airbus for 13 aircraft from the A320neo family and with Boeing for six 787-9 Dreamliner. In addition, the airlineis taking leasing another 37 new A320neo-family aircraft from leasing companies over the said period to significantly grow its fleet.

Amadeus’ global network of travel sellers will have access to a broader range of Vistara’s content, including the full range of international, as well as preferred and negotiated fares. All content will be available for travel sellers to shop, book and service through the Amadeus Travel Platform. In addition, Amadeus-connected travel agents will enjoy complete visibility of the airline’s inventory in real time; to enable travel sellers to deliver an even greater level of customer service than through any other provider.

OLD CITY OF JERUSALEM – NOW MORE ACCESSIBLE TO WHEELCHAIR USERS AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED

The Old City of Jerusalem has become more accessible for both wheelchair users and the visually impaired, thanks to improved infrastructure and audio apps to help residents and visitors better navigate the small streets and alleyways of the Old City. 

The accessibility of the Old City is an innovative and groundbreaking project that enables wheelchair-bound residents and visitors to enjoy the historic and cultural wealth of the city. Among other things, 4kms of streets in the Muslim, Armenian and Christian quarters were adapted, and about 2kms of handrails were installed alongside staircases. The accessibility is carried out with the cooperation of the merchants and the residents of the area.

The Old City of Jerusalem and its walls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and therefore are subject to special preservation rules designed to present the city and its heritage to its visitors while developing and upgrading it to the benefit of its residents and employees. The Old City is the most visited place in Israel with about 10 million visitors each year.

The accessibility of the picturesque alleys of the Old City is intended to ease the congestion in the main streets and to enable wheelchair users, the users of freight carts (including strollers), and other handicapped people, to visit the city’s tourist attractions with greater ease. Facilitation includes: Roads fixing; Fixing and renovation of public services (including accessible); Adding direction and explanatory signs to the main sites and spatial maps along the main tourist routes; Upgrading the current cleaning and garbage collection system; Replacement of stone cladding; Highlighting historical or archaeological findings of public interest; Installation of infrastructure cladding for water clocks and a garbage collection point in the tourist area according to the “street language”; Renewal of business complexes, facades and facilities along the route; And the completion of promenades from Zion Gate to the Dung Gate along the northern outer wall.

In order to complete the process, the East Jerusalem Development Company also produced a printed accessibility orientation map along with a dedicated application in 8 languages that enables real-time navigation between the alleys and sites (GPS-based, similar to Google Maps). Visitors to the Old City are invited to download, free of charge, accessible guided tours in the “Vocal Tours of the Old City” application (in the Jewish Quarter, Via Dolorosa, Temple Mount, Jaffa Gate, and Zion Gate). In addition, the Center for the Blind in Israel has made available an app that has made the Old City of Jerusalem accessible to the blind with special audio tours.

The Tower of David Museum, located at the gateway to the Old City, has made its flagship night show, known to all for its spectacular visual content, accessible to the blind and visually impaired with a descriptive audio accompaniment, the first of its kind in Israel. In conjunction with the Central Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired, an audio description (in Hebrew and English) narrates each scene presented in the show, which depicts each different historical period. The uniqueness of audio description is that it is embedded in the Night Experience’s screening technology automatically, and is delivered through cordless headphones which are easy to use.

The Tower of David Museum also runs special tours for visitors who are visually impaired where visitors get to feel “history” by having hands-on experiences, touching the different faced stones from the time periods of the city’s history from the stone masonry from 2000 years ago and King Herod’s elegant huge blocks of stones to the rougher stones from the Crusader’s time period and onwards. The Museum also had models of Jerusalem that show the development of the city as well as a model of the actual citadel itself allowing visitors who may not be able to see the development of the city – feel and listen to the history of the city unravel.

The Old City accessibility project is being funded by the Jerusalem and Heritage Ministry and the Jerusalem Development Authority, together with the Ministry of Tourism, the Accessibility Department of the Jerusalem Municipality, the National Social Security Agency and the Israel Antiquities Authority, carried out by the East Jerusalem Development Company and accompanied by accessibility consultants according to local topographical restrictions, at a cost of over 20 million NIS.

With an aim to identify solutions to the critical challenges of sustainable urban living, Messe Frankfurt India will host India’s first Technical Textile Hackathon on 22nd November 2019. The hackathon titled “Techtextil NEXT” will build an eco-system that supports India’s technical textile start-ups and enables them to develop products and prototypes with Technical Textiles, driving innovations in the industry.

Representing the supply-chain of fibre to innovation & start-ups to investor stage with, India’s first Technical Textile Hackathon aims to potentially build business models that can be funded, scaled, and taken global. The hackathon is expected to bring India’s top 10 technical textile start-ups under one roof. While the manufacturing side will be represented by companies of speciality fibres, yarns, textiles, fabrics, products along with brands and traders, the entrepreneur side will cover SME’s, start-up ecosystems and accelerators.

IXAMBEE: CRAFTING BETTER ECONOMY WITH ONLINE “LEARNING” COURSES

India, a country that is set to become the youngest country by 2020 is also the one where thousands of young aspirants from small towns visit the megacities to beat the existing competition in competitive exams for government jobs.  Since the examination system has shifted from the traditional written exams to a computerized setup, Ixambee offers students with mock tests (stimulation of the real exam) in an updated environment. The students reach the centre where they are provided with a computer to attempt a mock test which normally consists of general awareness, reasoning, English, quantitative aptitude along with specific subjects like agriculture, insurance, law or IT.

With the core focus on learning, unlike its competitors in the market which offers only mock tests, Ixambee is a platform where one can not only test their aptitude but also prepare for the exam with videos based content. For every exam and subject, the platform has a set of short video content prepared, pre-recorded by the faculty. Every topic has a 10 to 20 or more videos depending on the length of the topic. Ixambee is exactly what every student dreams of while looking for coaching as the brand also offers notes for revision, many practice questions and live sessions with experts, especially for doubt clarification.

“There are various companies in the market which receive around 90 % of the revenue from selling the mock test. We started as a learning company and the mock tests became our ‘free product’ so that users can visit the website and experience the quality of the content at Ixambee”, CEO Chandraprakash Joshi shares his views on mock tests as a free product.

With increased access to the internet, the brand was not only able to reach the students in locations like Delhi but also cater to the students who migrate from small towns to receive a good quality coaching that is not available in their cities like Haridwar, Meerut, Jaunpur, or any other small city.

Chandraprakash believes that the credit for success to their brand also goes to the data availability in small places. He said “In the various specific location of Delhi, more than 1 lakh students have come to Delhi only for attending the SSC and banking coaching, and for other exams like UPSC, the number is separate. Since they don’ t have access to good coaching in their hometown they have to migrate to the big city but now with the quality content available online with Ixambee, people are starting to learn online.”

He added “Today we launch a video and it can reach the student immediately. The data availability has made the biggest change in the industry; people who have been doing only testing have been shifting to the learning sticking at their native place.”

Competition, a Growth Booster

With a good number of companies available as its competition, the brand believes that competition leads the brand to grow. A good number of players as competition allows the brand to know that the market exists and holds potential. It also helps the brand in ‘being on the edge’ and aware of the fact that ‘if we are not going to do it someone else will’ which creates a constant scope for working towards better quality services.”

Chandraprakash sees competition in a different light as he believes that “Being the second-movers in the market, we always wish to present strong competition to the existing players in the market as they have to be much more careful watching us.”

The Content Team

Ixambee has two teams for creating content including an in-house team and a team working from remote. Arunima, a co-founder of Ixambee who worked in the coaching industry for 7 years leads the in-house team to create content for mock test, whereas the video content which requires expertise on subjects like agriculture, law, IT, security markets is created by the experts working from remote.

The brand finds these experts from different platforms who are mostly ladies have taken career breaks, have worked in corporate for 5 to 10 years and have a good background in terms of their education and work profile, settled in Bangalore, Otana, Halwani (Aurangabad) and other areas across the country. The experts are a part of the Ixambee Team as the brand does not take a toss on quality with freelancers and consultants.

The Ixambee Family and Company Ethos:

The co-founders in the company are Chandraprakash who has experience in the banking background with 14 years in Yes Bank before the startup, Sandeep who belongs to the technical background and has also co-founded e-commerce platforms before Ixambee, and Arunima who has been working in her coaching institute since 2010, leads different divisions in the company with a total strength of 40 professionals.

With a relaxed company culture, each of the employees in the team is cooperative and works with a sense of ownership towards the brand. Each year, an offside is arranged the company where the family members of the team also join in, one of the examples of how the leaders are creating the company culture of Ixambee as a family.

Immediate Plans:

With 9 lakh registered students till date and more than 2000 paid students, the brand still has a lot of potential to grow which is what CEO Chandraprakash Joshi is planning as the immediate plans for the company in the online coaching space. He said sharing his views, “We have 9 lakh registered students on the website which is less as 3 crore people are preparing for these exams and hence we have a scope to grow and improve the quality rather than increasing the number of courses with our existing team.”

“At the same time, we are looking forward to raising money. After the ‘fundraise’ we will go from these 50 mock tests to 200 mock tests and 8 learning courses to 50 learning courses and then we will focus on reaching more people and building revenue. We are working on both the plans with the existing team and set up along with plans after the funding.” he further added.

            New Delhi, 03, October 2019: India has a tremendous cultural heritage potential, and in a bid to live up to its commitment to promote heritage tourism in India, Resbird Technologies Private Limited (part of Bird Group) has developed ‘Audio Odigos’ – a mobile audio guide app for visitors, under the ‘Adopt a Heritage’ project by the Ministry of Tourism (Government of India). Resbird Technologies (Bird Group) also became a ‘Monument Mitra’ under ‘Adopt a Heritage’ project by signing MOU with Ministry of Tourism & Govt. of Delhi for providing tourism amenities at Gol Gumbad, Lodhi Road, New Delhi-03.

Audio Odigos

The application was jointly launched today by Mr. Yogendra Tripathi, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Ms. Usha Sharma, Director General, ASI at the ‘Paryatan Parv’. The application is a part of the MOU signed between the Ministry of Tourism, Archaeological Survey of India and Resbird Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Dr. Ankur Bhatia, Executive Director – Bird Group, Mrs. Smriti Bhatia, Consultant – Bird Group, Mr. Himanshu Kumar, Business Head – BirdApps and Ms. Geetanjali Nanda, Senior Executive Assistant – Business & Projects were present from Bird Group for the app launch. At the ceremony, Resbird Technologies Private Limited (Bird Group) also received from the Ministry of Tourism and Delhi Government the ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ for the adoption of the heritage site Gol Gumbad, Lodhi Road, Delhi.

As a ‘Monument Mitra’, Bird Group will be responsible for providing the basic &advanced amenities at Gol Gumbad as well as for the operations and maintenance of the site amenities. Audio Odigos, created by BirdApps (Resbird Technologies), enables visitors to discover the rich heritage culture of the Indian iconic sites through immersive audio guided tours. It offers ministry verified content, with visuals & voice over support in a variety of languages including English, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and vernacular languages where required.

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Radha Bhatia said “Working with the Ministry of Tourism for the progress of the sector has been the vision of the organization. With Audio Odigos, we believe that tourists will now enjoy a more enriching experience and take back historcial insights of the Indian culture and heritage.”

The Audio Odigos app contains an inbuilt map of the site for a smooth navigation during the tour. Listeners will be offered various versions of history like Synopsis, Detailed History and Podcasts. The audio can be chosen in their preferred language & version of the history.

Audio Odigos is now available for download on all Android and iOS supported mobile phone
