Omni Hospitals chain is improving health and wellbeing in the community and transforming the healthcare industry in every direction

The healthcare industry is the world's largest industry with revenue of $2.8 trillion. India's high population makes it a game changer here.  Indian Healthcare Sector is one of the biggest and fastest growing sectors in terms of revenue and employment.

During the FY2017, Indian Hospital Industry stood at US$ 61.79 billion and is expected to reach US$ 132.84 billion by 2022. Present-day, the sector is witnessing a surge of activity and the beginning of what is seen as a rapid phase of progress.

Emerging healthcare segments like diagnostic chains, hospital chains, and medical device manufacturers are increasingly attracting investments from a variety of venture capitalists.

The high growth of the Healthcare sector is the outcome of government plans, high private and foreign investments, which have promoted the overall infrastructure for Healthcare Services in the country.

.

India has progressed significantly in healthcare over the last two decades and expected to rank amongst the top three healthcare markets worldwide in terms of incremental growth by 2020. Though, it still lags way behind ensuring the reach of healthcare to every citizen.

The Government of India has introduced numerous healthcare schemes that are affordable to everyone and provides basic health coverage to all, but, a number of healthcare challenges still linger on.

The Indian healthcare sector is currently being plagued by ever-growing costs at both ends to the service provider and the patients. Besides this, with technology evolving and transforming the industry, it increases the needs of efficient and trained manpower to handle highly sophisticated deliverance of care.

With limited resources and high attrition rates in the healthcare sector, training and development become tough. And it is here, where we face the real challenge that in turn impacts the supply quality services to the patient.

Omni Hospitals chain is a flag bearer for innovating the health care industry of the country and delivering the best solution. It is driven by the vision of building a cost-effective chain of hospitals, which will provide super specialty services with warmth, compassion, and transparency.

This hospital chain was initiated in 2010, since inception, the hospital has set up over 30 specialties including Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Interventional Cardiology, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Cardiac Surgery, Complex Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement, Spine Surgery, Ortho-Oncology, Neonatology, Paediatric Surgery, and many other specialties.

OMNI Hospitals is the Healthcare division of INCOR which is one of the reputed real estate developers in AP, Telangana in Chennai and Bengaluru. The Group aims to increase its presence in several cities like Raipur, Mysore, Pune, Indore, and Bhubaneswar.

Botree Software International Pvt. Ltd.

Our Editorial team spoke to Dr Aloke Mullick, CEO of Omni Hospitals, here are the edited excerpts.

What's the guiding principle of Omni Hospitals? How would you summarise its contribution to boosting the healthcare delivery system?

The core vision of guiding OMNI Hospitals is to provide corporate hospital level tertiary care to patients, at secondary care and nursing home prices. The key differentiator between OMNI and other multi-specialty corporate hospitals is affordable and transparent pricing coupled with compassionate care.

What makes you different from others?

We plan to continuously leverage on our core strength of providing high-quality care at VERY reasonable prices in clean corporate ambiance facilities.

Despite facing huge peer group competition and lowering service prices; we managed the significant growth in profitability in 2018 because of stringent cost-saving strategies.

Quality and affordability are the two most glaring issues engulfing the healthcare sector today. How difficult it is to make a balance between these two at times?

We strongly believe that quality healthcare CAN and SHOULD be affordable. The key to achieving that is to constantly monitor ALL cost items against benchmarks, incentivize employees for suggesting out of the box cost reduction ideas, and strict monitoring and prevention of revenue leakage via system controls.

You have been associated with many top hospitals in the past. As an expert how do you analyze the evolution of the Indian healthcare system in terms of technology and innovations?

It is very poor primarily due to two reasons: high prices of above average technology products and lack of incentives from payers towards technology adoption.

However, the situation is improving, because of the introduction of OpEx based pricing model for good IT products, and an increasing understanding by stakeholders that good IT leads to lower costs. I do believe that real growth will happen once a carrot and stick pattern incentive scheme is put in place by key players like the Govt.

Which innovations Omni Hospital is focusing on to improve its efficiencies and quality of care?

We are in the process of deploying the following innovative practices and solutions for improving our operational efficiencies and quality of care:

  • Fixed price billing across most clinical care situations, including ICU care

  • An unrelenting focus on kindness and empathy from our caregivers

  • Electronic Medical Records for paperless care

  • Patient portals and remote video consultations

Throw some light on the utilization of technology in the hospital.

We have deployed a mature set of ICT tools and solutions including a full-featured industry standard Hospital Information System, Lab Information Systems, Radiology Information Systems, PACS, ICU Central Monitoring Systems, Management Information System, paperless patient feedback system, GP to hospital patient tracking system, etc. We have budgeted for EHR system in coming fiscal to support full paperless operations.

Karan Sawant - Founder - BeyondMe

Being one of the leading hospitals receiving international patients, how do you see the medical tourism sector developing in India? What are the current challenges?

The Indian medical tourism industry is an extremely price sensitive play, with patients from lower – middle socio-economic strata majorly from the Middle East, North Africa, Bangladesh, Afghanistan.

Hospitals with tight price control and competitive prices stand to benefit from this segment. Days of grossly overpriced foreign medical care are nearly over now.

What are your initiatives to improvise the patient experience?

We were one of the earliest hospitals to deploy a Net Promoter Score based paperless patient feedback system in India. This has given us a wealth of actionable information helping us to achieve greater levels of patient satisfaction. Some of our units have a Google satisfaction score of 4.5 out of 5.0, an industry rarity!

Presently, we have presence in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, and Kurnool with a total of 6 units with a cumulative capacity of over 850 beds. We have just launched a mother and child brand, Giggles in Visakhapatnam.

We plan to continuously leverage on our core strength of providing high-quality care at VERY reasonable prices in clean corporate ambiance facilities.

Despite facing huge peer group competition and lowering service prices, we managed the significant growth in profitability in 2018 with stringent cost-saving strategies. No, currently we don't plan to expand our footprint beyond South India.

"Omni Hospitals, though a young group of hospitals, is driven by a passion for healing patients with compassion and treating them with the highest level of professional competence and price transparency. We have experienced leaders in management, who believe that compassion comes above all.

We continuously strive to create effective cost reductions, the benefit of which is passed to the patients. Our policy is to be the lowest cost, professionally competent and compassionate tertiary care provider in all markets that we operate in.
