Health care is a summation of processes; prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The conventional wisdom says a sound mind resides only in a healthy body.

American showman cum politician P.T. Barnum remarked," The foundation of success in life is good health: that is the substratum fortune; it is also the basis of happiness. A person cannot accumulate a fortune very well when he is sick." Health care in the ancient period was not very different than modern times.

Today Health care has taken more organized form—Industry. Albeit all the processes are of importance, among all, the very pertinent one is Diagnosis.

A correct diagnosis requires empiricism, logic, and rationality which was introduced in a Babylonian medical textbook, the Diagnostic Handbook written by Esagil-kin-apli, the chief scholar of the kingdom. The Greek physician Hippocrates of the Age of Pericles used sensory methods for diagnosis.

Egyptian scholar Imhotep was the first to apply the method of medical diagnosis in the treatment of diseases. The medical diagnosis took the current modern form when the theories set down in the 20th century, the Oslerian ideal and Garrod's view, started to dominate the profession.

This tradition further transformed when the DNA technology got introduced, which is still in the development phase. In India, the healthcare industry in the post-independence period was the amalgam of the juxtaposition of traditional indigenous treatment and scientific form of treatment.

In the 80s the government introduced subsidy initiatives for private health players to enter the healthcare playground. The liberalization in the 90s gave impetus to the private sector to flourish.

The diagnostic industry in Andhra Pradesh was scattered in terms of services offered; not many offered a comprehensive range of Pathology and Radiology tests.

Amidst this Presto Chango of government encouragement, the Vijaya Diagnostic Centre was established by Dr. Surender Reddy in Himayatnagar, Hyderabad with a concrete vision to provide comprehensive, innovative and state-of-the-art diagnostic services under one roof, in a reliable, affordable and customer-centric manner.

Here are the edited excerpts from the conversation between our Editorial Team and the Chairman of VDC, Dr. Surender Reddy.

The Challenges

We are always at the forefront of embracing technological developments providing best in class equipment to ensure quality in service. It is a challenge when a lot of consumers and medical consultants remain unaware of developments and benefits offered by the improved technology which we offer.

We address this issue by conducting Continuous Medical Education events, where top medical practitioners create awareness about the latest technological developments in the field of diagnostic healthcare. Insurance in India generally does not cover diagnostic services, which can sometimes be a challenge for high-end tests that VDC offers.

Bursting the Myth of Sisyphus

To avoid mundanity, we offer rewards and recognition to the team members epitomizing our values and also the incentives for those who deliver best-in-class service.

For internal development, we have a 1-year Management trainee program for hiring promising young talent from premium Business schools.

We have employee friendly HR policies to ensure an equal and supportive workplace for all our team members. These efforts instill our culture and values into the team and keep them motivated.
