World Tourism Day: A Brief Overview

The World Tourism Day is celebrated since 1980, on the 27the September. The idea was taken in 1979 during the 3rd Session of UNWTO General Assembly in Torremolinos, Spain.

The major concept behind this day was to bring a strong network between countries and to promote tourism by emphasizing more on its cultural, political, social and economic value.

The event focuses to tackle international problems outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and also show the contribution the tourism sector can make in achieving these goals.

UNWTO invites people of all ages and backgrounds to hold and take part in WTD celebrations in their respective countries or holiday destinations. Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General, UNWTO issues a message to mark the occasion and chairs the official celebrations.

India has been chosen to celebrate World Tourism Day 2019. The day will be celebrated around the theme, 'Tourism and Jobs: A better future for all.'

It was announced at a function organised to present National Tourism Awards 2016-17 on World Tourism Day last year. A total of 77 awards were given to the tourism industry stakeholders, Central agencies, State governments and individuals by Tourism Minister.

In this award function, Andhra Pradesh got the first price for promoting "Andhra Pradesh Tourism" as a global brand, Kerala ranked the second position for comprehensive growth of tourism; Rajasthan and Goa shared the third position.

Every Year United Nations World Tourism Organisation decides the theme and host country for World Tourism Day which draws attention towards tourism. In 2018, the theme for world tourism day was "Tourism and Digital transformation". The theme of World Tourism Day 2019 means this year is "Tourism and Jobs: A better future for all".

According to the theme this year, UNWTO – United Nations World Tourism Organization will focus the on three developing areas which are:
