Mr Viresh Oberoi

Founder CEO &MD

Mr Viresh Oberoi is the Founder CEO and MD of mjunction services limited. Since most mattress brands take 7-14 days for delivery, and dont really meet basic quality standards, customers usually don’t purchase these products online. But Sunday attracted customers by offering same day delivery of mattresses. Founded in January of 2015, the Bangalore based start-up raised $1.25 million in a  seed round led by Accel Partners India earlier this year.The start-up has invested this funding towards building its technology platform, hiring key talent and marketing. They launched unique marketplace platform by partnering with Spacewood and Style Spa. With its fifty employees, CapriCoast.com is pioneering the O2O (online to offline ) model, which enables modular furniture brands to take their extensive showroom network online, thus significantly increasing their visibility and customer reach. With this model, customers can now begin their modular furniture purchasing journey online – exploring an extensive design catalog, customizing their design with free consultations, and then buy online or experience their design offline at these brand showrooms and buy from there. From the customer’s research and discovery phase and personalized service of home consultations and showroom visits, to on-site installation and after-sales support, we provide constant support every step of the way.

  For their supplier network, CapriCoast will be significantly increasing their showroom capacity utilization, providing faster returns on capital already deployed.

“We will be investing heavily into technology to improve the on-platform customization and personalization capability. We also intend to be launching other solutions for the home early next year.” said a senior executive of CapriCoast.

With an agenda to include India as a permanent member of United Nations Security Council, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to United States last month . He was greeted by hundreds of supporters and visitors, just after arriving in New York on 24 September. In his five-day visit to US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed world leaders at the United Nations general assembly, hosted G-4 leaders and held several bilateral meetings.

Arriving in New York he stayed at Waldorf Astoria hotel along with other leaders such as Russian president Vladimir Putin, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping. A special programme was set to celebrate 70th anniversary of United Nations in New York. After a bilateral meeting with Modi at United Nations Headquarters, President Barack Obama recalled his India visit and started lecture by saying “ it is a great pleasure to meet once again with my good friend, Prime Minister Modi. Our meeting builds on the progress that was made during the wonderful visit that I was able to make to India, to the Prime Minister’s invitation, and the historic participation that I had with Republic Day.  We’ve elevated our ties.  We’ve committed ourselves to a new partnership between our two countries.”

PM Modi also thanked him for the U.S. support for India’s permanent membership of a reformed U.N. Security Council and said  “I expressed our appreciation for continued U.S. support for India’s membership of the International Export Control Regimes within our targeted timeframe.”

                In this US trip, PM Modi has successfully propagated his Make in India, Digital India and Skill India campaigns. Modi opined India is ready to welcome the CEOs with both hands and this is the perfect time for them to invest in the world’s largest democratic country. He met 47 chief executives of Fortune 500 companies at a dinner in New York. Fortune Editor Alan Murray moderated the discussion. “Reform in governance is my number 1 priority. We are for simplified procedures, speedy decision making, transparency and accountability,” Modi told the CEOs over dinner. Indicating successive growth of Indian Economy, Modi said “FDI all over the world has fallen but in India it increased by 40 percent. This reflects confidence in the Indian economy.”

The Prime Minister also met Mr. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc. He mentioned that India has a special place for the company, as Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple Inc., went to India for inspiration. They discussed about Digital India initiative.

“Digital India is an enterprise for the transformation of India in a scale unmatched in human history. Nothing else will do in a country with 800 million impatient youths waiting for change,” Modi told business leaders in San Jose.

Mr. Modi also met the CEOs of Indian Origin and many other tycoons. Mr. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, Mr. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, Mr. Shantanu Narayen of Adobe attended the party. Mr. Paul Jacobs of Qualcomm and Mr. John Chambers of CISCO later joined him for the Digital India Dinner Programme.

                          The first Indian-American Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Microsoft’s plan is to be a partner of the Indian government to introduce low-cost broadband connectivity to five lakh villages in India. “We believe that lost-cost broad band connectivity coupled with the scale of cloud computing intelligence that can be harnessed from data can help drive creativity, efficiency and productivity across governments and businesses of all sizes,” he added.

At the event Prime Minister outlined his vision for Digital India. He said “ In this digital age, we have an opportunity to transform lives of people in ways that was hard to imagine just a couple of decades ago. This is what sets us apart from the century that we have just left behind. There may be still some who see the digital economy as the tool of the rich, educated and the privileged. But, ask the taxi driver or the corner vendor in India what he has gained from his cell phone, and the debate gets settled. I see technology as a means to empower and as a tool that bridges the distance between hope and opportunity. Social media is reducing social barriers. It connects people on the strength of human values, not identities.”

“ Today, technology is advancing citizen empowerment and democracy that once drew their strength from Constitutions. Technology is forcing governments to deal with massive volume of data and generate responses, not in 24 hours but in 24 minutes. When you think of the exponential speed and scale of expansion of social media or a service, you have to believe that it is equally possible to rapidly transform the lives of those who have long stood on the margins of hope. So, friends out of this conviction was born the vision of Digital India. It is an enterprise for India’s transformation on a scale that is, perhaps, unmatched in human history. Not just to touch the lives of the weakest, farthest and the poorest citizen of India, but change the way our Nation will live and work ” he added more.

Arriving in California on 26 September, Narendra Modi visited Tesla Motors, which was started by a group of engineers in 2003. The company believe that electric vehicles are better than gasoline driven vehicles. Mr. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors received him. He pointed various innovations done by Telsa Motors. Renewable energy, Tesla’s battery technology, and innovations in energy storage figured in the discussions between the Prime Minister and Mr. Elon Musk. Modi also visited the factory floor of the company and met employees of Indian origin who work at Tesla.

After arriving in Silicon Valley, PM explained rich Indian political history in favour of Silicon Valley and tech tour. To promote Indian start-ups among Silicon Valley investors, Modi emphasized Make in India initiative and invited tycoons to invest in India. Being invited by Zuckerberg, PM also visited Facebook’s Silicon Valley headquarter and participated a pre-scheduled  question & answer forum . He met Sheryl Sandberg, other Facebook employees and guests invited by the Indian Embassy.

                           Modi announced that Google had agreed to provide free and high speed public Wi-Fi in hundreds of Indian railroad stations. Chip maker company Qualcomm, which has thousands of employees in India, promised $150 million to finance Indian start-ups. As an immediate response, Microsoft also launched commercial cloud services from its three data centres in Mumbai, Pune and Chennai in India.

The e-commerce space is growing at an exponential rate in India with newer players joining the already crowded space. The industry itself may reach $100 billion by 2020. However,amidst all these growth stories and escalating valuations traditional retailers, who comprise of 90 per cent of the entire retail market in India, are suddenly feeling left out.

These offline players may be a little late to the party, but they are trying to compensate this delay with their in-depth knowledge of the retail market. LEADERSHIP: How CEO’s can lead technical experts like manufacturing, R&D, construction, design etc when you are not the expert ?

Many budding leaders fail to cross this hurdle up the leadership ladder or taking too much time to train themselves to cross this milestone. The earlier you cross this hurdle, the faster you become an evolved leader.

All through my childhood days, the spirit of competition was ingrained in me, competing with fellow students to get meritorious positions. Pedigree meant a lot. I had to compete to get the prestigious IIM seat. But as I travelled the road to corporate leadership, a new brain wiring was the recipe for success. Collaboration instead of competition.

LEADING TECHNICAL EXPERTS AND INDIVIDUALS SMARTER THAN YOU

When was it the first time when you encountered a situation that your subordinate asked you a question and you did not have an answer. When did you find yourself not even understanding what your subordinates are saying, the technical jargons, the specific metrics, the problems thereon ? Did you feel frustrated, incompetent, disoriented ? Every leader goes through a stage in their journey up the “leadership ladder” when they are confronted with responsibilities outside their expertize, when subordinates are technically much better qualified or much more smarter than them. How should you handle this stage in your leadership journey ?

Over more than 2 decades of corporate experience, I have seen many budding leaders failing to cross this hurdle up the leadership ladder or taking too much time to train themselves to cross this milestone. To my mind, the earlier you cross this hurdle, the faster you become an evolved leader.

I call this milestone the transition from the specialist to becoming a truly evolved leader. I am today sharing some of my own learnings as I kept moving sectors and industries which were very diverse and often put me into situations where I had people around me who were experts in their fields (like network team in telecom and construction, design and contracting teams in real estate) and smarter than me in many ways. You could have similar situations like leading manufacturing, R&D, equipment maintenance teams in various industries. I have been following what I have coined as a “MERCERP” approach in dealing with individuals smarter and more technically qualified than me.

M – Metrics : Often I found that it is a challenge to measure an expert’s accomplishment. There are many different parameters which get thrown at you. What is important is to be able to design very simple business based metrics which can be understood by everyone and has inbuilt milestones to track progress. Sometimes, it is a good idea to get outside expertise like a head office functional expert or an outside expertise for a short term when you are not very sure. However, it is very important to ensure that you do not criticize an expert for missing a milestone but definitely look for any repeating patterns which can indicate that either the expert is not expert enough or the project needs to be better defined.

E – Enable : Before crossing this leadership milestone it was easier, you made decisions based on your unique knowledge and expertize and you could easily see your contribution. However, as a leader at this juncture, the role shifts to not doing a task yourself but enabling things to make happen, developing the fine balancing skill of when you have to let go and when you have to intervene, developing your trust on the capabilities of the team working on the project. Keep asking lots of dumb questions. Find out what worries your team, where they get stuck, from where they can get inputs and then create opportunities to make things happen. Simply put, just get insights into what your experts do and make space for them. Make them accountable for their results, not their activity.

R- Relationships : This is the transition from focusing on facts, knowing what to do , telling your team the answer to their problems to focusing on relationships. How well do you know your experts ? Do they connect emotionally with you ? Are you able to adapt your style to suit the individuals and the situation ? Do you know whom to call to enable finding a solution ? The leadership ability to bring key experts together to collectively find a solution comes out of building that emotional connect, that versatile leadership style and  through developing your emotional intelligence as a leader.

So when you do not know the solution to a problem your experts have come up with, admit “I do not know”. Yes, it takes a different mental ability to say so. Throw the problem to the team, picking up the best minds based on your experience. Your team knows the everyday problems and the best solutions will come out from the grassroots. Ask them the right questions. And this is where my ICF certification in coaching really helped me, helping them reach that “aha” moment. I have found that asking for help and enabling teams to find the answers by asking the right questions helps you earn respect and gives them ownership of the process.

E- Executive Presence : A question that must be coming to your mind is how do I inspire confidence in my experts when I am not confident of the facts ? What has helped me personally cross this treacherous gap is developing Executive Presence. As a leader you are constantly being watched, you are always under a microscope. Your executive presence is judged by how you dress, how you speak, how you stand, how you connect to your audience through sincere emotion, how you in front of a group of customers, peers or employees deliver key company messages with clarity, confidence and poise…the list goes on. Is there calmness and confidence in your voice, are your sentences crisp and to the point, are you natural and exude warmth, do you handle stressful situations without losing grace ? When your team sees you holding your own amongst other senior leaders, they respect you. These are not personality traits but skills leaders develop over a period of time.

R – Reverse Mentoring : In yesterday’s organization, the boss was the teacher and the employees were there to learn. Not any more in this millennials age. Learning today is a “two way street”. How open are you to continuously pick up new skills ? How do you feel asking an employee 3-4 levels below you to be your mentor on a new skill you want to pick up ? The key is being shameless, being in active listening mode and being in a continuous learning mode. Just like learning a foreign language, if you do not immerse yourself, you will never become the person who can start using jargons of your new industry or function and get to engage your teams effectively.

P – Big Picture : The key leadership skill to develop is, can I see how the problem I am focusing upon is affecting people 2 levels up and 2 levels down. This will force you to think deeper and make the real difference to the organization as a leader. Your task is to dream, envision, plan the future of your organization and steer the ship. Get your experts aligned to this big vision and then give them their space. Use your network to enable and get work done and communicate with all stakeholders, the broader perspective.

I have found this “MERCERP” concept work for me as I transitioned to P&L roles and moved industries where I had to deal with highly technical people which were the core of that industry. I hope some of these learnings work for you as well.

Cyber Security is no longer a threat for IT and Banking sector. It’s affecting internet users of all age and areas. Responding fake electronic communications, students are also becoming victim of cyber threat.

To make people aware of those kind of Cyber Threats, Centre for Cyber Forensics and Information Security wing of University of Madras has initiated an umbrella programme called Cyber Security Awareness Programme or CSAP. Chennai based Dr.N.Kala Baskar, Director-in-Charge of Centre for Cyber Forensics and Information Security, has been leading the team from July 2015.

Since the programme involves people from different communities, it’s split into two phrases. The CSAP 2015 Phase I, is awareness program for the students from different schools and colleges. It is proposed to conduct awareness campaign in different academic premises in Chennai. They have already covered nearly 15 schools, 3 colleges and 2 universities. As a result over 6000 participants are benefited by this event. The students were taught about Password security, email security – scams and spams, Mobile security, Wifi and bluetooth security, ATM security, Pinhole cameras and CCTV camera’s.

To conclude the Phase I, a rally was conducted on 12 september from Marina beach to Labor statue area in Chennai. The event was flagged off by M.P.Nirmala (IAS Retd) former Principal secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu. Former Founder Director of Centre for Cyber Forensics and Information Security also attended the programme. Over 250 participants from schools, colleges and universities participated the programme. There was a street play enacted by students with concept of cyber security issues.

This programme was followed by a Book Release function. M.P.Nirmala (IAS), Former DGP – C.L.Ramakrishnan, Director, Dr.Ramasubramanian, Valiant Technologies, Mr.Anjaneyalu, Managing Director of CoeDF were also present for the Book Release function. The Book is titled Cyber Tales and is divided into four sections- Cyber Tales, Cyber Similes, Cyber Puzzles and Cyber Anthem. Another online portal inccfis is being developed to make netizens aware of those kind of challenges.

“ A person needs to communicate with another and so there is always an exchange of information between the parties in conversation if they need to remain engaged. But most people do not know how or why to keep sensitive information private and what could be the risks associated if what is sensitive to someone is made public. ” Smita, a participant. She also added “ The idea behind the creation of CSAP was to educate the public about the dangers of Cyber World and how what we consider so resourceful – the internet, could violate one’s privacy. Therefore we began to work towards this cause from the start of July and just before the rally we happened to have successfully interacted with 6000 plus students from various institutes, where the message was conveyed with the use of effective presentations and demonstrations.”

The team is going to extend this programme to other cities and rural areas as well. “ For Phase II, I’m planning to take it to the other interior and few remote places in other districts.” Dr. Kala revealed.

Dr Kala has spent nearly 23 years in Forensic , out of which 8 years in Computer Forensic. Prior to joining Centre for Cyber Forensics and Information Security, she was a Scientific Officer at Computer Forensics Division of State Forensic Sciences Department in Chennai.

Everbody is using emails mobile phone. They should first know about security matters. They will also be able to understand password and privacy settings. Even they are downloading many apps but don’t know which privacy is to keep. Most of those apps ask personal information. One needs to think whether it is necessary or not.” she advised to the young netizens . “ One can not prevent it from happening. But we can make them aware about Cyber Threats. Responding fake mails may afffect their system.” she added.

Mr. Rajeev Khanolkar is a serial entrepreneur who co-founded SecurView with Niten Ved in 2007. Married into a family that is closely knitted into the fashion industry, lisa further explains her enthusiasm. Mr. Mahesh Gupta the man behind Kent Ro was the first member who dared to choose business over job in his family. An IIT graduate from Kanpur in Mechanical engineering and alumnus of Indian institute of Petroleum, Dehradun Mahesh began his career in sales in 1978 with Indian Oil

The journey of mechanical engineer started in 1985, from a small room in his house with just 20,000 which he had saved from his job with IOCL. His first invention was in the field of petroleum conservation instrument where he earned fame and half a dozen patents to his credit.

His turning Point came with the establishment of KENT RO SYSTEM in the year 1998, when he charted out on a new enterprise after jaundice gripped his son in a posh colony of South Delhi. Knowing that jaundice is a water-borne disease, Gupta researched and analyzed all the available water purifier in the market. He was dissatisfied with available options and decided to make a better quality purifier. After several trails, he made his own water purifier and became confident that is product is good enough to be marketed. “Coming from an engineering background, making my own water purifier was not difficult task; all I needed to do was export the components. The experiment turned into success. And then I thought to bring it out in commercially in the market. I started from scratch with an investment of about 1 lac and four member team. Today Kent has grown 40% market share in RO mineral and has turnover 580 crore and 2,500 employees”, says Gupta. Apart from him his son is actively involved into business, while his daughter is into a separate business.

Kent today is competing and international brands and outbidding them on basis of its latest technology, better service well equipped distribution system and good branding.

Kicked off from voyage of self made RO system, Kent RO today manufactures Kent RO water purifiers, Kent Tap guard, Kent vegetable and fruit purifier, All Clean cleaner with their manufacturing plant in Roorkee. “We are competing with two major players, Hindustan Lever and Eureka Fobes. However we are confident to overpower them with better technology and products with latest innovation, but they should be according to consumer need. We can manufacture products and market them, but they should be according to consumer need. We can manufacture product and market them, but if it is not consumer friendly, you won’t exist for long.”

Innovative marketing strategies and state of the art technology has motivated him in taking his brand to the next level with confidence to beat the international champion too. Kent Ro is the most dynamic and visible water purifier company, which over the years has enjoyed the Bollywood brand ambassadors like Hema Malini, Esha Deol , Booman Irani, Ahaana deol and others.

Water is basis component for the survival of human beings, and dirty or infected water can spoil the health and infrastructure of a country. HE says “ My vision is to make a ‘healthy and happy family ‘, and we are promoting the value of purity, importance of water for health, and keeping beauty and vigour intact with good drinking water through Kent.”

Healthcare is not just a business for me, it is a passion. In fact it is very the very purpose of existence of Kent. Like any other successful business, Kent too has been working according to the needs of our customers and we work hard each day to make our customers happy”, adds Mahesh.

His passion is to work, but besides working, he loves cars and having good food “Well, II love cars and love to drive whenever given chance. Cars for me are both luxury and mode of travel”. I love wearing Louis Philippe shirt while rest of my outfit is mostly custom-stitched, for me an ideal holiday is attending Art of living sessions in Bengaluru.”

His message for young entrepreneurs is. “They should bring new innovations, and must believe in their dreams. Think less and have passion to live.”

Cultural Quotient: The new differentiator for a Successful Leader

Does an opportunity to work in a foreign land excite you ? Are you conscious of the sensitivities of your teammates with respect to their religion or backgrounds? If you are, then your chances of reaching the top of your organization is far more than if not. These traits, which are being sighted as the key differentiator between a good and a great leader, is your Cultural Quotient or CQ.

CQ measures the capability to function effectively in a variety of national, ethnic and organizational settings. It’s a form of intelligence that has been tested by academic researchers in more than 30 countries over nearly a decade and coined the term to keep up with present age of globalization. CQ is similar to IQ and EQ in that it quantifies a set of capabilities believed to be important to both personal and professional success. It is unique in that it focuses specifically on the skills needed for success in unfamiliar cultures. Cultural intelligence is being described by experts as a core capability essential for success in 21st-century business and has attracted worldwide attention across diverse disciplines. Research has examined what gives rise to cultural intelligence and looked at testing strategies that may lead to enhanced CQ.

Now the world is shrinking into one global village where organizations are spreading their businesses beyond geographical borders. This means that resources need to be equipped to handle different cultures and perform well under diverse situations. Even if a position doesn’t require any international travel, managers and HR departments are realizing the importance of having culturally savvy employees who can vigorously meet the challenges of serving a diverse customer base at home and abroad, as well as becoming effective participants of culturally diverse teams. In addition, employers are finding that personnel with high CQ are not only more effective cross-culturally but also are more adaptable and innovative as they go about tasks within their own cultural contexts.

Transformational training is a unique module that helps candidates develops their CQ in a way that enhances their professional performance. In our observation, these are some of job-related traits that work for better individuals with higher CQ:

  • Decision Making: One reason why CQ can increase your job performance is that it results in better judgment and decision making. Individuals with higher CQ are better at anticipating and managing risk and at making decisions that involve complex, multicultural dynamics.
  • Negotiation: Being able to negotiate effectively across cultures is cited as one of the most important competencies needed in today’s global workplace. Individuals with higher CQ are more successful at cross-cultural negotiations since this trait gives a better understanding of how to read the nonverbal cues during a negotiation and make one more aware of how to motivate an individual or company from a different culture.
  • Networking: Needless to say, individuals who can successfully network and build relationships with individuals and organizations that span geographic, cultural, and ethnic boundaries will be sought after for their ability to know how to network effectively across varied contexts. In today’s age, companies constantly depend on creative mergers and acquisitions across nations and are best facilitated by individuals who can build multicultural networks.
  • Global Leadership Effectiveness: Leaders need to effectively hire, motivate, and develop personnel from a variety of cultures. Even if he doesn’t aspire to a primary leadership role, one’s job performance certainly requires that he effectively influences and develops teams of culturally diverse participants. With higher levels of CQ, one is more likely to develop trust and effectively lead multicultural groups and projects at home or in other parts of the world

Employees can be trained to understand how to encounter new cultural situations, judge what goes on in them and make appropriate adjustments to understand and behave effectively in those otherwise disorienting circumstances. Such discernment is becoming more and more critical, for a country like India where government is inviting FDI in all sectors and also for successfully attaining ‘Make in India’ policy which will require cross-border negotiations, understanding new markets, unifying dispersed leadership teams and developing global marketing plans.

So we know and understand that CQ is important and it can be enhanced. The immediate question that arises, is how? As mentioned, it is certainly possible through effective training. Transformational training, for instance, begins by assessing that person in terms of four distinct CQ capabilities:

  1. Motivation, which is the person’s interest in and confidence at functioning effectively in culturally diverse settings and forms the core of such trainings
  2. Cognition- the person’s knowledge of how cultures are similar and different which does not necessarily mean that one needs to be an expert on every culture but to understand fundamental cultural differences and their effects on everyday business

iii. CQ Strategy which is basically how the person makes sense of culturally diverse experiences. This comes into play when making judgments about one’s own or others’ thought processes and makes it easier to draft effective planning in the context of cultural differences

  1. Behavior- the person’s capability to adapt his or her behavior to different cultures which requires having a flexible repertoire of responses to suit various situations while still remaining true to one’s self

It is important to note that just as in the case of IQ and EQ, it is very important to have robust assessment techniques that give an objective evaluation of one’s CQ abilities in order to gauge his development and progress. This is also the best way to ensure that the weaknesses can be turned into strengths over a period of time, through personalized training metaphors.
