Early Life and Academic Journey

Vishal Sikka was born in May 1967 in Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh, India, to parents of Punjabi descent. His father was an officer in the Indian Railways, and his mother was a teacher.

The family later moved to Vadodara, Gujarat, where Vishal spent his formative years. He pursued his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Rajkot and Rosary High School in Vadodara.

Vishal embarked on his academic journey by enrolling in the Computer Engineering program at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. However, driven by his aspirations for higher education, he decided to move to the United States and joined Syracuse University in New York.

There, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. His thirst for knowledge led him to Stanford University, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1996.

Under the mentorship of renowned AI pioneers such as Marvin Minsky and John McCarthy, Vishal Sikka's academic pursuits laid the foundation for his future contributions to the field of technology and artificial intelligence.

Entrepreneurial Ventures

After a brief stint at Xerox's research labs, Sikka embarked on his entrepreneurial journey. He founded iBrain, a company that competed with Business Objects at the time. Subsequently, iBrain was acquired by PatternRX, Inc.

His second startup, Bodha.com, focused on non-invasive, service-based integration of enterprise applications and information. This venture led to Sikka joining Peregrine Systems as their Area Vice-President following their acquisition of Bodha.com.

In 2002, Vishal Sikka joined SAP, one of the world's leading software companies, where he headed the advanced technology group responsible for strategic innovative projects.

His contributions led to significant advancements within SAP, including the development of SAP HANA, an in-memory platform revolutionising data processing.

In April 2007, Sikka assumed the role of SAP's first-ever Chief Technology Officer (CTO), a position that underscored SAP's commitment to innovation.

In May 2014, Vishal Sikka transitioned to Infosys, one of India's premier IT services companies, as its CEO and Managing Director. His appointment marked a pivotal moment in the company's history, as he took over the reins from Infosys founder S.D. Shibulal.

Vianai: Pioneering AI

In 2019, Vishal Sikka embarked on his latest venture, Vianai, an AI company based in San Francisco.

With an initial funding of $50 million and a distinguished advisory board, including luminaries like Indra Nooyi and Alan Kay, Vianai aims to advance the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Sikka's ambition for Vianai led the company to develop its own programming language to democratise AI and ML applications.
