Historical Overview

The origins of Tirupati are steeped in Hindu mythology. According to legends, the Tirumala Hills are considered the manifestation of Adisesha, the serpent god. Lord Venkateswara, an incarnation of Vishnu, is believed to have settled here during the Kaliyuga to save humanity from the trials and tribulations of the age.

The Pallavas, who ruled parts of Southern India, and the ardent devotees of lord Venkateswara, the Chlos, made substantial endowments to the temple. They contributed to the expansion and renovation of the temple complex. The Vijayanagara kings, particularly Krishnadevaraya, devout worshipper of Lord Venkateswara, visited the temple multiple times and made significant donations, including the famous golden ornaments and statues.

During the British colonial period, the administration of the temple came under the East India Company and later the British Crown. Despite the political changes, the temple continued to thrive as a center of pilgrimage. In the late 19th century, the administration of the temple was streamlined with the establishment of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in 1933 to manage the temple's affairs.

After India's independence, Tirupati continued to grow as a major religious and cultural centre. The town of Tirupati expanded with improved infrastructure, including better connectivity through roads, railways, and the establishment of the Tirupati Airport.
