When it comes to booking a tatkal ticket or an immediate ticket, well, the process can be a challenge and tricky especially since tatkal tickets get booked very fast.
However, for those wondering how to book a tatkal railway ticket online, or how to do a tatkal booking, RPF has cracked down on several agents who were using illegal software to bypass the IRCTC tatkal ticket booking system which makes the chances of getting confirmed tatkal tickets will go up.
The tatkal IRCTC booking is allowed in all train classes except Executive class and First AC class. Here are some of the common queries about how to book tatkal tickets online IRCTC
Passengers can book Tatkal e-tickets for selected trains one day in advance excluding the journey date from the train originating railway station.
The Tatkal tickets can be booked on an opening day from 10:00 AM for AC class, which comprises of 2A, 3A, CC, EC, 3E coaches.
They can be booked at 11:00 AM for Non-AC class, which includes SL, FC, 2S coaches.
When it comes to booking a tatkal ticket, the charges differ which are fixed as a fare percentage at the rate of 10 per cent of basic fare for second class, while 30 per cent of basic fare for all other classes.
The charges are subject to minimum Rs 10 and maximum Rs 15 for Second (sitting) class.
They are minimum of Rs 100 and a maximum of Rs 200 for Sleeper class.
They are also a minimum of Rs 125 and a maximum of Rs 225 for AC Chair Car class.
They are minimum Rs 300 and maximum Rs 400 for AC 3 Tier class
The tatkal tickets booked online prices can go minimum Rs 400 and maximum Rs 500 for AC 2 Tier and Executive classes.
Here are some basic rules for booking tatkal tickets:
Select the Tatkal checkbox in the 'plan my travel' page as well as provide other details.
For some selected trains, class or locations, the Tatkal quota may not be available, hence, it is advisable to check the availability before proceeding further.
No concession is allowed in the booking of Tatkal tickets and no refund is granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets.

Save some time by entering passenger details beforehand i.e. before 10a m for ac class and before 11 am for Non-AC class
Login into the IRCTC website 5-10 minutes ago and do these before 10 am for ac ticket and 11 am for Non- AC ticket.
Select origin-destination, choose the date as today's date and enter ticket type and click on 'Find Trains'. Followed by selecting quota as TATKAL and click on BOOK NOW for today's date for any train.
Enter passenger details including id card details and mobile number.
After that, instead of clicking on 'Next' which will take you to payment, click on 'Replan' which takes to back to the 'Plan My Journey' page.
Exactly at 10 am (or at 11 am for FC, SL and 2S) put your correct journey date and try booking.
When you come back on the Passenger Details page, you will see that all the details which you entered before are still there, so you just enter the captcha and click on 'Next' for payment.
Try booking in 2A (second ac) first for AC classes. For most of the routes, 2A gets filled less quickly than 3A despite lesser berths.
You can try for Non-AC at 11 AM.
For the fastest payment of Tatkal tickets online choose net banking and prefer HDFC and ICICI bank.
For payment through cards, you need to enter long card numbers and a lot of other details which takes time.
Keep the phone nearby to get OTP details from the phone as it is mandatory.
