Hartalika Teej is a three-day fast (vrat) that marks the honour of Goddess Parvati. In the word Hartalika Teej, 'Harat' means abduction and 'Aalika' means a female friend, and Teej means 'three'. Hartalika Teej vrat is observed by both married and unmarried women.

Married women observe the fast for their marital blessings, and unmarried women observe this Hartalika Teej fast for a good husband. On this auspicious day, women celebrate this day by singing traditional songs and also enjoy the arrival of the monsoon.

How is Hartalkia Teej 2024 celebrated?

On Hartalkia Teej, women who are observing the fast are not allowed to consume the water they can intake water the next day after breaking the fast. If Hartalika Teej Vrat is observed, it cannot be left undone and should be done with proper rites and rituals.

On this auspicious day, those observing the fast stay awake all night and celebrate the day by singing religious hymns. During Hartaika Teej, handmade idols of Lord Shiva, Ganesha and Goddess Parvati are made from sand and black soil.

The places of worship where Lord Shiva, Ganesha and Goddess Parvati are kept are decorated with flowers, banana leaves and many other things. After placing the deities, devotees start Hartalika Teej with Shodashopachara Puja.

During the Shodashopachara Puja, traditional men's dress, Dhoti and Angocha are offered to Lord Shiva. After this puja, sacred stories and jagarans are performed at night.

Then, the next day after the morning aarti, Goddess Parvati is offered cucumber sweets and sindoor (vermilion), after which the fast is broken.

In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Hartalika Teej Vrat is celebrated as Gauri Habba, where married women fast for a blissful married life from Goddess Gauri (Parvati).
