Gender-based discrimination and violence are major issues in the present world. To bring the world's attention to this problem and resolve it, the United Nations (UN) recognizes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on the 25th of November every year.

On this day, the UN works to increase awareness to move mindsets and behaviours towards ending all forms of violence against women and girls.

To help bring attention to this important issue, we've put together a list of 5 organizations working in India to protect women's rights and to curb violence against women and girls.

International Center for Research on Women

Headquartered in Washington DC, ICRW was founded with the belief that when women have opportunities to improve their lives, everyone benefits. It talks to women directly and encourages their voices to be heard.

ICRW does research to find out the barriers to the economic and social stability of women. Then, it makes plans  to remove that issues and empower women. International Center for Research on Women has regional offices in New Delhi and Mumbai.

One-Stop Crisis Centre or the Nirbhaya Centres

One-Stop Crisis Centre or the Nirbhaya Centres was initiated to cater the immediate medical, legal, and psychological needs of the survivors. It has a 24-hour helpline service for distress and rescue calls.

Emergency response and rescue services with linkage with existing mechanisms like 108 emergency services are expected to lead to timely help for victims. The Union ministry of women and child development initially planned 660 one-stop crisis centers across the country.

Apne Aap

Apne Aap is a basically group of people who are dedicated to works for women safety and empowerment. It was founded by women who were featured in the documentary, The Selling of Innocents.

The groups offer a protected place for women where they can discuss their rights and learn about options that can help keep them safe from a life of forced prostitution and sex slaves. Apne Aap helps women to connect with another and offer opportunities for safe employment and education.

International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care

PCVC is working for victims and survivors of domestic violence. It provides all necessary services like crisis management, legal advocacy, support and resource services. International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care or PCVC has started the national domestic violence hotline to help women who are struggling with different forms of abuse. It also supports victims with legal representatives and supports through referrals.

Angala

Angala was established in 1993 to systematically reach out, respond and offer moral, social and legal support to women who are victims of violence and abuse in the marriage and outside the marriage.

The Bengaluru-based organization also supports the women who approach them to get employment, find admission for their children in orphanages. Angala carries out follow up visits at their houses in case of reconciliation with a previously abusive spouse, offer medical treatment, and finds them accommodation.

These five organizations fighting are continuously working for the elimination of violence against women and for their empowerment. They are providing effective support to women in need all across the country.

We all are aware of the violence against women. Each of us should take a step to stop it. Keep in mind that sometimes our behaviour might contribute to, enable, ignore or excuse all such forms of violence. Promise yourself to work for it and also encourage others to do the same.
