International Youth Day

Himani Verma

The United Nations International Youth Day is celebrated on 12 August every year. This day recognises the efforts of the youth in enhancing global society and draws attention to a set of cultural and legal issues surrounding them. International Youth Day focuses on the difficulties that some young people experience worldwide. Half the children between the ages of six and 13 lack essential reading and math skills, and childhood poverty is still a prevalent problem globally. The UN created Youth Day to help draw awareness to these issues as we strive to find solutions. It's a day for the UN's day of observance; it is not a public holiday.

Background

The United Nations defines the world’s youth as the age group between 15 and 24, representing one-sixth of the global population. Many of these young men and women reside in developing countries, and their numbers are projected to increase. The idea for this Day was not born in a UN office but in the hearts and minds of young people. It was proposed in 1991 by young people gathered in Vienna, Austria, for the first session of the UN’s World Youth Forum. Their vision and determination led to the recommendation of an International Youth Day for fundraising and promotional purposes to support the United Nations Youth Fund in partnership with youth organisations.

In 1998, the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth adopted a resolution to designate August 12 as International Youth Day. The UN General Assembly confirmed this recommendation in 1999. The first International Youth Day was celebrated in 2000, with one of the key events being the presentation of the United Nations World Youth Awards to eight Latin American and Caribbean youth and youth-related organisations in Panama City, Panama.

History

In 1965, the United Nations General Assembly began making efforts to impact the youth. They announced the Declaration on the Promotion among Youth of the Ideals of Peace, Mutual Respect, and Understanding between People. They began giving their time and resources to empower the youth by recognising coming leaders and offering them resources to meet the world's needs.

On December 17, 1999, the UN General Assembly officially endorsed the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth recommendation, establishing Youth Day. The first celebration of this day took place on August 12, 2000. Since then, it has been used to educate society, mobilise the youth in politics, and manage resources to address global problems.
