Hanuman Jayanti is the festival of Hindus, and it is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Hanuman. Lord Hanuman is the son of Mata Anjana, and Kesari, the son of lord Brihaspati.

Lord Hanuman is known as the incarnation of lord Shiva and a great devotee of lord Rama. This year Hanuman Jayanti will be followed on the 23rd of April 2024, Tuesday.

On this day, devotees perform various rituals and visit the temple to seek the blessing of Hanuman. In India, Hanuman Jayanti is vigorously celebrated and worshipped because it is believed that lord Hanuman is a deity with supreme powers and conquers evil spirits.

When Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated?

Hanuman Jayanti is the Hindu festival celebrating the victory of lord Hanuman over the demon Raavan. Hanuman is the deity who devoted his life to lord Ram and mata Sita, and Jayanti is derived from Sanskrit, where Jaya means ‘victory’ and Anta means ‘end’, which means the one who gets victory over evil in the end.

The festival is observed on the 15th day of Chaitra Poornima, which is the full moon day of Chaitra month (Late March or early April) as per the Hindu calendar.

According to some Hindu Mythology, it is said that Hanuman was born in Chaitra (April), some believe in Baisakh (Late April), and other believes in Marghazi month (November). Yet the actual time of Hanuman’s birth is not confirmed but is majorly followed on the Chaitra month.

Why Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated?

Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the Janmotsav (Birthday) of lord Hanuman, a Vanara (Monkey) god who looks alike a Monkey.

It is said that to get rid of the curse, Hanuman's mother, Anjana worshipped Lord Shiva for 12 years and gave birth to Hanuman and then she was freed from the curse, so it is also said that Hanuman is an incarnation of the 11th Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva.

Hanuman is also a well-known disciple and a true devotee of lord Rama with pure love and devotion.

How Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated?

Lord Hanuman was born during the sunrise, so devotees perform a holy bath during sunrise, keep fast, meditate and also followed numerous rituals before the sun dawn.

Devotees apply vermillion (sindoor) to Hanuman’s forehead, chant different Hanuman mantras and hymns and read Hanuman Chalisa or lines from the Ramayana (Sundarkand) are some common practices which is performed on Hanuman Jayanti.

Many other things, including sweets, fruits and coconuts as prasad, diyas, and flowers are also offered to lord Hanuman. Devotees also perform aartis and pradikshana or parikrama (the path around something). At last, devotees apply red sindoor on their foreheads and distribute prasad to everyone.

Which states of India celebrate Hanuman Jayanti?

The auspicious festival of worshipping lord Hanuman is celebrated across India, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and in few more states. But every state has a different regional and time variance to celebrate Hanuman Jayanti.

In North Indian states, Hanuman Jayanti is observed on Chaitra Purnima which is on the full moon. In Orissa, this festival is celebrated during the new year of Orissa, Vishubha Sankranti, which is also known as Mesha Sankranti.

In Tamil Nadu, Hanuman Jayanti is known as Hanumath Jayanthi, and it is observed during Margashirsha Amavasya, which falls in the month of November.

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it is known as Hanuman Jayanthi. The celebration lasts 41 days, starting from Chaitra Purnima and ending after the 10th day during Krishna Paksha in Vaishakha month.
