What does Gudi Padwa mean?

Gudi Padwa is celebrated by placing a Gudi flag outside the house, which is a sign of victory. Where Gudi denotes lord Brahma’s flag, and Padwa denotes the first day of a new Moon phase.

A Gudi flag is made by wrapping a thin and long bamboo stick with colourful cloth and decorated with neem, mango leaves and a garland of flowers.

On the top of the bamboo stick, a silver or copper vessel is placed upturned. Lastly, the edge of the vessel is tied up with Mauli wrist thread, and a swastika is also drawn on the vessel.

This festival is celebrated as the creation of the universe by lord Brahma and also marks good luck, success, wealth and happiness. It is also believed when lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, the victory was symbolized by the Gudi flag.
