Prabodhini, the Ekadashi that falls on the Kartik Shukla Paksha, is renowned by the name Devutthana Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi, Kartik Shukla Ekadashi and Kartiki. In addition, it is also referred to as Devutthana Ekadashi or Devthan. Devutthana Ekadashi in 2024 is on Tuesday, 12 November.

The occasion marks the end of the four months of Chaturmas, and it is believed that Lord Vishnu sleeps during these four months. It is also believed that Lord Vishnu sleeps on Shayani Ekadashi and wakes up on Prabodhini Ekadashi. Hence, the day is also known as Vishnu-Prabodhini, Hari-Prabodhini, Dev-Prabodhini, and others.

According to Hindu beliefs, Prabodhini Ekadashi marks the beginning of the marriage season, as Hindus do not consider this Chaturmas period auspicious for marriages.

A fast on Kartik Shukla Paksha is more fruitful than a hundred Rajasuya Yagyas or a thousand Ashwamedha Yagyas. It is customary for Sanatan Dharmaites to observe Vratotsav, especially on Devutthana Ekadashi.

On this auspicious day, devotees are allowed to chant any mantra, perform penance and bathe with reverence, as all this is considered auspicious. It is believed that fasting on this day and staying awake the whole night destroys all sins and leads to attaining Baikunth (heaven) as well.

What is the method of worship?

On this auspicious occasion, devotees wake up early, partake in a holy bath and wear clean clothes. An artistic symbol of Lord Vishnu's feet is made in the worship place or courtyard, and if there is sunlight in the courtyard, the feet of Lord Vishnu should be covered.

In addition, an image of Lord Vishnu is also made in a tola (mortar) and filled with fruits, sweets, ber, singhara, seasonal fruits and sugarcane. On this day, diyas are lit at home as well as in temples. Devotees observing fast consume fruits for the whole day.

The resonant sounds of the bell, conch, mridang etc., are played to wake up Lord Vishnu from his four-month yogic sleep.

After this, tilak is applied to Lord Vishnu fruits, and offerings of new clothes and sweets are also presented to the deity. Then aarti of Lord Vishnu is performed while listening to the story of Devuthani Ekadashi.

About Tulsi Vivah

The joyous celebration of Tulsi Vivah also marks on Devutthana Ekadashi. This marriage is believed to symbolise the union of Goddess Tulsi (the sacred plant) and Lord Shaligram (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu). As the consort of Lord Vishnu, Tulsi is also known as Vishnu-Priya.

It is said that, after waking up from Yogic sleep, Lord Vishnu first answers the prayers of the natives who devoutly worshipped Harivallabha Tulsi.

That's why Tulsi worship is very important to invoke Lord Vishnu. According to Vedic scriptures, if someone wants to have a girl child, they should perform Tulsi Vivah to earn the virtue of Kanyadaan.
