Anant Chaturdashi is one of the significant festivals celebrated by Hindus and Jains. The day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped in his Ananta (infinite) avatar.

It is believed that observing Anant Vrat (fasting) on this day can help you get rid of karma, sorrow, and pain. Anant Chaturdashi is celebrated enthusiastically all over India, mainly in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka.

When is Anant Chaturdashi celebrated 2024?

Every year, Ananta Chaturdashi or Chaturthi is celebrated on the fourteenth day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of Bhadrapada (August–September) as per the Hindu calendar.

This year Anant Chaturdashi will be celebrated on 16th September 2024, Monday. The word Ananta Chaturdashi is derived from the Sanskrit word where Chatur refers to four, Dashi refers to 10, which means 14 (Chaturdashi) and Ananta refers to endless.

How to celebrate Anant Chaturdasi 2024?

On Anant Chaturdashi, all the rituals of this auspicious festival are performed with utmost devotion and faith. The puja's materials and ingredients are kept ready a day before Anant Chaturdashi or Chaturthi.

Then, the devotee makes 14 long tilaks with kumkum (vermilion) on a wooden plank and places 14 puris and 14 maal puas on it. Along with this, Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, jaggery, honey and ghee) is also kept on a wooden plank.

Then, a thread is taken where 14 knots are tied, representing Lord Ananta and bound on the cucumber with 5 times twirled in Panchamrit. This thread is believed to be a Raksha Sutra or a protective thread, which protects against the evil eye.

This thread is tied by both men and women after completing the rituals of Ananta Chaturdashi, where men tie it on their right wrist and women on their left wrist. It is said that the thread should be tied for 14 days, and then the thread should be removed.

One of the important rituals is believed to follow an Anant Vrat or Chaturdashi Vrat, where women observe this fast for the family's well-being and men for wealth and prosperity.

Conclusion

Anant Chaturdashi marks the worship of lord Anant, an incarnation of lord Vishnu. Ananta means 'endless', and Chaturdashi means 'fourteenth'’ hence it falls on the 14th day of the bright half of the bright fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September).

On this auspicious day, people of the eastern regions of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh worship Anant, the divine incarnation of Lord Vishnu and offer him Kshirsagar(Panchamrit).

On this pious day of Ananta Chaturdashi, devotees of Lord Vishnu read and listen to Vrat Katha (stories) of Lord Vishnu. Along with this, devotees also recite hymns from the Vedas, this is also called Anant Vrat.
