What does Akshaya Tritiya mean?

Akshaya Tritiya is derived from Sanskrit, where Akshaya means ‘never decreasing’, which refers to prosperity, hope, joy and success, and Tritiya means ‘third phase of the moon’.

Akshaya Tritiya is named after the third lunar day of the spring month of Vaisakha (April/May) as per the Hindu calendar and is also the reason for celebrating Akshaya Tritiya on the third day of Vaishakh. It is also said that on this day, both the sun and moon are at their planetary best.

When Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated?

Akshaya Tritiya is observed on the third day of the lunar day on the Shukla Paksha (bright half) of the month Vaisakh (late April or early May) according to the Hindu calendar.

What was done on Akshaya Tritiya?

According to Hindu mythology, on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, many things were done which also shows the importance of celebrating Akshaya Tritiya.

  • It is said that lord Ganesh and Ved Vyas started writing the epic Mahabharata. 

  • On this day, the goddess Ganges river descended from heaven to earth.

  • This day also marks the birth anniversaries of two deities, the first being Goddess Annapurna and the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Parashurama. 

  • In Jain dharma also, Akshaya Tritiya marks the birth anniversary of their first god, lord Adinath.

  • It is also said that the goddess Lakshmi was assigned the job of being the treasurer of Gods after she was worshipped by Kubera (the god of wealth).

  • On this precious day, when lord Krishna’s friend Sudama came to rescue him, Krishna granted Sudama wealth and monetary gains.

  • Some also believe that during the Pandavas' exile, Lord Krishna blessed them with an 'Akshaya Patra', a copper vessel, which would continue to produce unlimited food and would never leave the Pandavas hungry

What are the significance of Akshaya Tritiya?

  • Businessmen seem to worship lord Ganesha and goddess Lakshmi before starting a new account for the next financial year, as both deities are the symbol of wealth, good luck and success. In Eastern India, this is known as ‘Haalkhata’.

  • Many people also buy gold because it is believed that buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya will bring good fortune and wealth.

  • New beginnings are considered to be pious on this day, like weddings, journeys, construction and many more.

What is done on Akshaya Tritiya?

  • Devotees of Vishnu observe a fast on Akshaya Tritiya and worship the deity. Tulsi water is also sprinkled all around who is the consort of lord Vishnu. Along with this, rice, salt, ghee, vegetables, fruits and clothes are also distributed to the poor.

  • In eastern India, the first ploughing for the upcoming crop season is done on Akshaya Tritiya.

  • A holy bath is taken in the Ganges, after which barley is offered to the sacred fire.

  • On this day, spiritual activities, meditation and chanting holy mantras are also performed to maintain good fortune in life.

  • Devotees of lord Krishna are seen applying sandalwood paste on the deity because it is believed that a person will reach heaven after death. 

Where Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated?

In Akshaya Tritiya, it is believed that whatever commences will bring good luck, success and fortune. It is the holy and precious Hindu festival which is celebrated across India.  But it is majorly celebrated in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Maharashtra.

  • Uttar Pradesh- On the day of Akshaya Tritiya, the feet of lord Krishna is shown in the Banke Bihari temple. The deity of lord Krishna is embellished with sandalwood paste. Later, cucumber, aamras, juice and laddoos are also offered to the deity.

  • Odisha- In Odisha, Akshaya Tritiya marks the starting day of the construction of the chariots of Rath Yatra. On this day, the Chandan Yatra also begins in Odisha. On the other hand, farmers also start sowing seeds. In Odisha, during Akshaya Tritiya, the consumption of green leaves is prohibited. 

  • Maharashtra- In Maharastra, Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated with great pomp by women. Women are seen worshipping goddess Gauri to seek the blessing of the well-being and long life of their husbands, exchanging haldi (turmeric) and sindoor (vermilion) and also offering sweets and fruits to the deities. 

  • West Bengal- In West Bengal, people buy gold and silver which marks luck and prosperity. Traders, merchants and businessmen perform various rituals and also worship the goddess Lakshmi for wealth and success in the business.
