Heeding Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s advice, Raghunandan Saran set up Ashok Motors in Chennai for the assembly of Austin cars. In 1955, British Leyland acquired a stake in the project changing the name of the company to reflect the new partnership. In the same year, Ashok Leyland began manufacturing commercial vehicles. Comet, its first major product, played a very important role in the success and future of the company.
In 1987, the principal overseas share holding of the company was taken by the trans-national, multi-billion-dollar conglomerate – Hinduja Group – which now holds a majority stake in the company.

Ashok Leyland has introduced the BS4 iEGR (intelligent Exhaust Gas Recirculation) technology in its vehicles in April 2017. Combining the best of CRS (Common Rail System) and EGR, it uses improved in-cylinder combustion management for reduced injection pressure leading to better engine life, no loss of payload and successfully meeting BS IV emission norms.
Ashok Leyland has recently launched a digital market place for its customers, an industry-first combining four innovative digital solutions – i-alert helps fleet owners stay in direct sync with their fleet and attend to any immediate issues; service mandi connects drivers and fleet owners to the closest trained and qualified mechanics, and can also give them live updates of the status of their vehicle repair.
