United Nations day – 24 October 2019

The United Nations day is a celebration of the anniversary of the founding Charter as it came to force in 1945. The UN Charter is the landmark document that embodies the hopes dreams and aspirations of the people. The charter of the united nations is a foundational treaty of the United Nations, an intergovernmental organization. It focuses on outlining a broad set of principles relating to achieving ‘higher standards of living’, addressing ‘economic, social, health, and related problems,’ and ‘universal respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion.

The UN Day is celebrated each year on the 24th of October as the UN charter got effective on this date in 1945 after the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. The day is however celebrated since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States (any country that makes up the UN) as a official public holiday.

Drafted on 14th August 1941, the he Charter was opened for signature on 26 June 1945. It was signed at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Centre in San Francisco, United States by 50 of the 51 original member countries (Poland, the other original member, which was not represented at the conference, signed it two months later).

It entered into force on 24 October 1945, after being ratified by the original five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the Republic of China, the Provisional Government of the French Republic, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics , the United Kingdom, and the United States and a majority of the other signatories.

The nuclear bombs changed the scenario in the Charter and the countries which signed the charter. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki took place on 6 and 9 August, respectively; the introduction of this new weapon of warfare completely changed the security environment.

Inequality, climate change, human rights and dignity at risk are few of the various problems that the UN takes action towards by raising awareness, organizing events and contributing to the people who need the resources and opportunities for better quality of life. The United Nations General Assembly while declaring  24 October as the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, by remaking that it  “shall be devoted to making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gaining their support for” its work.

The first event ever called United Nations Day was a World War II Allies Day of solidarity and military parades launched by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 14, 1942. It was launched six months after the declaration by United Nations. The day was celebrated throughout the World War II and has no direct connection with the current international observance.

On the United Nations Day, several international schools celebrate diversity of the Student body of the United Nations. It includes cultural performances, food fair with food from different parts of the world. This year, the 74th United Nations Day would be celebrated, with the aim to take initiatives towards a better world.  There are a innumerable ways one can support UN’s visions.
