Susan Wojcicki is a technology executive and the current CEO of world’s biggest video sharing platform, YouTube. Wojcicki played an important role in founding Google and later in 1999 she became the first ever marketing manager of Google. She also used to supervise the original Google videos and as YouTube was getting popular she suggested acquiring it in 2006.

After completing her master degree in economics from university of California and MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management she began to work as a management consultant in R.B. Webber & Co. and later in Bain & Co.  She also worked as a marketing executive in Intel. With Google, she was able to rise up the ladder quickly and became the Senior Vice President of Ads and Commerce. Two largest acquisitions of Google which was DoubleClick and YouTube were also possible because of her efforts.

In 2017, she was ranked at the sixth position in the Forbes list of “The World’s Most Powerful Women.” She is also a social activist as she strongly opposes gender discrimination in technology corporations, supported increase of paid parental leaves and making coding a permanent subject in educational institutes.

Susan Wojcicki was born on 5 July in 1968 to Esther Wojcicki and Stanley Wojcicki. Both of her parents were well educated as her mother was an educator and her father was a professor of physics at Stanford University. She studied in Gunn High School in California and used to write for her school newspaper. In the year 1990, Wojcicki graduated with honours in history and literature from Harvard University then she planned to peruse her career in economics but later shifted her interest into technology.

YouTube is the world’s biggest video sharing platform which was started by three friends from America namely Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, they were also former employees of PayPal. They started YouTube in 2005 and in the year 2006 Google bought it for $1.65 billion and now YouTube works as a subsidiary of Google.

Users on YouTube can view, share, rate, comment, upload and subscribe to any channel according to their preference. There are many types of content on YouTube like video clips, music videos, documentary films, movie trailers, TV show clips, audio recording, educational videos and video blogging (Vlogging). Majority of content on YouTube is created by individuals but major media houses like Vevo, BBC and Hulu also publishes their content through YouTube Partnership Program.

An unregistered user can only watch videos but if you want to upload a video or comment you need to register yourself first. People who affirm themselves to be 18 years of age or above can register them on YouTube.

Creators on YouTube earn through advertising revenue from Google Adsense according to their audience and content type. Majority of video on it are free to watch but there are some exceptions as YouTube has launched their services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium which offers ad-free music, content and YouTube original series.

According to a report in 2017, almost 400 hours of content is published on YouTube every minute and every day over a billion hours of videos are been watched. In the year 2018, YouTube became the second most visited site in the world; the only website which is ahead of YouTube is Google. In early 2019, it was recorded that almost 500 hours of content was published on YouTube every minute.

YouTube has a lot to improve when it comes to handling copyrighted content, promoting conspiracy theories, videos related to child violence and sexually abuse, animal abuse and minors involved in pedophilic  activities which are eligible for monetizing through Google Adsense.
