Sourav Ganguly – The Next President of BCCI

In an informal meeting on Sunday in Mumbai, all the units affiliated from BCCI had finalised the names of their new office persons. An agreement is formed between the units of BCCI to make the former Indian Captain and the current president of CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal) Sourav Ganguly to be the new president of BCCI.

Sourav Ganguly has been serving as the president of CAB and his experience as a player, captain and a mentor will benefit Indian cricket. He was also the head of the technical committee of BCCI and media personality for several years. As per the new guidelines, Sourav has to go for a cooling-off period from the next year in July.

Son of Home Minister Amit Shah, Jay Shah is named to be the next secretary and the younger brother of former BCCI president Anurag Thakur, Arun Dhumal will be the next treasurer as the nomination will end on Monday. All the candidates came out on top without any opposition, therefore, no election will be held.

Brijesh Patel, who is backed by N Srinivasan is also in the race of being the next president of BCCI but most of the states are opposing him for this post.

One of the senior officials told PTI that “It’s true that there was a choice between Brijesh and Sourav but there was some opposition for Brijesh but everyone is happy with Sourav being the president of BCCI.”

Once new office persons presume the office, it will mark the end of 33 months of committee of administrators who were running cricket affairs in India.

Sourav Ganguly, after the informal meeting, said that “My top concern would be the development of first-class cricket i.e. Ranji Trophy.” He further said that “Financial interest of the players will also be taken into consideration.”

When Ganguly was appointed as the captain of Indian cricket team in the year 2000, Indian cricket was in filth because of the match-fixing scandal. He brought new players like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbajan Singh, Md Kaif and M.S. Dhoni who later became our cricketing heroes and played a huge role in the development of Indian cricket.

Sourav Ganguly also said that the image of BCCI got hampered in the last couple of years; it is a great opportunity and responsibility for him to step in. It adds more responsibility when you are selected without any opposing. He will make sure that India remains the powerhouse of cricket in the world.

When reports asked him to compare the feelings and emotions of being an Indian captain and the BCCI president he said, “Nothing can beat the feeling of being an Indian captain.”

Ganguly added that he never thought of being the president but he always wished to take the top position as he refused all the other positions offered to him.

Overall, the people of India believe that Sourav Ganguly can play an important role in the evolution of Indian cricket as the president of BCCI as he did when he was the captain.
