The CEO Magazine, in a conversation with Ms. Kanchan Naikawadi – the founder of Indus Health Plus

What stimulated your ideas to start a new business venture or to bring significant changes in an existing business/at a workplace?

Getting into healthcare business was a fairly coincidental move. The thought of establishing a Preventive Healthcare company came to my mind after being traumatized by my father’s early death from cancer due to lack of early detection. That’s when I realized that technology, money or even health insurance cannot help you stay away from the lethal grip of lifestyle diseases like cancers, heart attack, and diabetes. This huge loss in my life impelled me to take a step in creating awareness in the society towards the path of prevention – a road less traveled.

What is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?

Being instrumental in creating a better life for people! Besides, I have received the award of Best Entrepreneur in Preventive Healthcareby CMO Asia in 2017 and altogether Indus has received more than 30 awards in the past 17 years.

Non-communicable diseases continued to emanate because of theshortage of medicos and the unevolved infrastructure. The need of the hour, therefore, was to bridge the gap by providing a roadto recognizing degenerative diseases at an early stage where treatment couldsave lives and reach the masses throughvarious channels. Triumph over our objective persuaded prominent hospitals to become our alliance partner. Indus takes pride in itsaccessible, available and affordable health check-up services delivered to more than 6, 00,000happy familiesacross78 cities.

Have you ever failed in your initiatives? What have you learned from your failures?

There is no business failure as such but the dearth ofpreventioncreating ordeal around me is what I consider a failure. I am carving new methodologies tospreadgreaterawareness about prevention.

What are your ideals?

I believe in the motto-‘You can do what you love to do’. When it comes to working I am an eager beaver.I believe in honesty and ethics! To succeed in life, one has to carry a single persona all around.

How many hours a day you work on an average?

An entrepreneur is driven bypassion, which never getsrestricted by hours! I literally breathe Indus in-and-out.

What is the best decision you’ve ever made?

Transforming my compassion into an opportunity fora noble cause is my best decision ever.

What effective strategies/initiativeshave you implemented to achieve success?

At the initial days of Indus, healthcare wasn’t as evolved as it is today. We brainstormed to penetrate the market and mindsets. We a created a record of 200 CT Angiography tests in a single day at 48 centers and across 26 cities. We invested much time in data analysis to demonstrate the requirement of preventive health check-ups and its benefits to the people.

Our organization makes sure that the tests are timely conducted and delivers the report on the very same day along with the doctor’s consultation. Indus executives ensure same quality service irrespective of the location. We have been successful in entering the market and creating a pleasant experience due to the early realization of the integral role of technology in business, the reason why we have strong and integrated back-end processes, easy payment options, in-house Call Center and Electronic Health Record system that not only encompasses and leverages digital progress but also revamps the method care.

How do you define success?

Reaching out to people and creating a culture of prevention describes success for me.

Please tell us about your future plans.

Currently being operational in78 cities with 122 centers, we are seeking PAN India presence in the near future to propagate Preventive Healthcare. We wish to consolidate our national presence by spreading ourservices to all districts and towns. To fulfill our ambition of facilitating health screening on a macro level, we are always open to adopting new technologies and mechanisms for early detection. We are also increasing our already vast product portfolio, just to enable every person lead a better life.To add more value to this ever evolving industry, we are aiming to inform and educate the masses about the concept of prevention and wellness, and extensively working on creating acceptance of early diagnosis. We are working with the corporates and encouraging them to make the health of employees an important part of the organization culture. This helps the corporates control absenteeism due to unhealthy sedentary lifestyles, and instill a sense of belonging in the employees. With the edge we have in Preventive Healthcare, even international bodies have started recognizing us and we are extending our services internationally. We are already present in the UAE and GCC countries.

Whom do you attribute your success to?

My uncle and mentor, Mr. SadanandBapat, and my husband Mr. Amol Naikawadi have been the driving factor behind this incredible journey. Indus wouldn’t have been possible without my husband’s support and the core team’s dedication.

Do you think your personal life is affected by your professional life? How?

Indus Health Plus is a child to me like my two biological daughters. I give my quality time to each one of them. The trick that works for me is to prioritize things and delegate work according to the situation on both fronts. I believe, motherhood makes a woman more geared up and equipped for entrepreneurship than widely believed.

What do you think is the biggest challenge to female leadership?

Challenges exist in the mindset of the society.Women can definitely do better than men. If women tend to choose the rugged path, they need to be headstrong. For an entrepreneur, losing is not an option!
