MV Hospital for Diabetes and Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, Royapuram, Chennai strives to help  every person with diabetes to live his normal span of life in a healthy way.

Over the past three decades, Diabetes has emerged as a global epidemic.  Escalation in prevalence of diabetes in India can be assessed by the fact that India has now been declared as the Diabetes capital of the world.  Recent studies in this field show that Diabetes is one of those few conditions that accounts for multiple disorders including obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, severe kidney and lower urinary tract infection, stroke and many other diseases. The alarming rise of Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes is attributed to the booming economic development of India that has affected lifestyle enormously. The major factors that have resulted in inducing the development of the disease cover increased level of stress, irregular working hours, lack of exercise and consumption of alcohol and fast food.

Dr. M. Viswanathan, 'Doyen' of Diabetology in India, began to think about Diabetes in 1950s when Tuberculosis was widespread in India. An insightful person, Dr. Viswanathan was able to anticipate that Diabetes would become a severe threat for humanity after fifty years. He discovered that family history of Diabetes would be one of the reasons for developing diabetes in future. His inclination for learning more about 'Diabetes' and work towards its prevention led to establishment of Vijaya Clinic in 1954 with the motive of leveraging his profound knowledge for the welfare of people. The clinic initially started as a generic hospital. However, Dr. Viswanathan kept an unswerving focus towards helping every diabetic to live his normal span of life in a healthy way.

In 1972, Vijaya Clinic was renamed as 'M. V. Hospital for Diabetes' and started functioning as a hospital exclusively for Diabetes and its complications. The hospital pioneered diabetes specialty services & care in India. The hospital administration set up The Diabetes Research Centre Foundation in Chennai in 1972 to promote research in the field of Diabetes Mellitus. The Research Center pioneered advanced research in the field and gained recognition from the Indian Council of Medical Research. The Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi acknowledged the center as a leading research institution in 1983.
