With a vision of leveraging technology to help students learn better, Eon Education started its journey in 2012. Eon Education has a team of over six hundred teachers and eighteen management staffs who run classes in the major cities across India.

Backed by its rich experience in the field of education and technology, Eon Education helps student learn more effectively. Through its major technology platform OeTutor, Eon provides gamified educational content and online classes to the students.

While working at MindTree, Anupam Kumar Tandon feverishly wrote a business plan that expounds the idea of democratizing education by freeing it from the confines of four walls.

However, he did not submit the plan to the MindTree Evaluation Team. The business plan forced Anupam Kumar Tandon to dwell deep upon the existing vacuum in the current education system.

"I wanted education to be universally accessible, unstructured, entertaining and self-motivating just like a game.

I also had a firm belief that relation between a teacher and a student should be like that of a mentor and a mentee and in the days to come technology had a greater role to play in student learning initiatives.

This belief was further strengthened by the fact that I had done a great deal of my own learning through e-learning courses and internet. Even during my Masters, I relied a lot on these courses, " asserted Tandon.

Anupam Kumar Tandon, an extreme innovator and believer in game-changing businesses of the future, had served different organizations. He worked for Fidelity National, Bangalore as a Tech Lead. Prior to that, he had worked at MindTree as a Senior Quality Analyst.

Showcasing a flexible business rules and models while bringing in essential tools, people and processes to the table to support the learners, his firm Eon Education displays a deep understanding of the business environment and academic interest. As a result, Eon Education is robustly growing at the rate of 100% to 200% YOY.

In Conversation with Anupam Kumar Tandon

What opportunities do you foresee in the current e-Learning industry in India?

Anupam Kumar Tandon: I see a massive opportunity in India. India always has been a knowledge hub, a place of Gurus and Teachers.There is an ever-growing thirst of knowledge.

Anyone who can offer a premium educational material much better than what is freely available in internet will have a bigger role to play in e-Learning space.

Innovation via adaptiveness and gamification, usage of analytics, social media, mobility, cloud and big data powered by very superior content will win at the end of the day.

However any e-Learning company that solely relies only on the content in various mediums as audio, video, document, ppt et al may not be able to go that far.

What are the major challenges that e-Learning companies like yours are currently facing? How do you plan to overcome them?

Anupam Kumar Tandon: Still many people are in the old age thinking which subscribes to the view that learning needs to happen through a physical teacher. This poses some challenge to us. Our view is that a teacher is there to inspire and motivate.

Learning, understanding and retaining information can happen much effectively through technology. Of course this thought of relying on physical presence of teacher is slowly changing and over a period of time, we hope that there will be great adaption of technology in learning initiatives.

Secondly internet speed and bandwidth cost still happen to be a challenge. While there are great reforms going on as part of digital India initiative, we hope things will fall in place over a period of time. We are also lucky to have a prime minister who is so enthusiastic about technology.

This makes us hopeful.

How do you keep your employees updated with the latest technologies and trends?

Anupam Kumar Tandon: When an employee is hired, one of the key traits that we look into is how much the employee is willing to learn and how teachable the employee is in terms of productivity tools. We also have a lot of fun in office.

A few months back we partially replaced our email by Facebook's new business chat app called "Workplace". I guess we were one of the few companies to adopt this so early in India.

Though this step looks simplistic, the app has phenomenally improved employee engagement, internal communication and team productivity.

Where do you want to see Eon Education in the upcoming years? 

Anupam Kumar Tandon: I personally feel that gamification, virtualisation and 3D are the future of e-Learning. That is in our long term road map. At this moment we are also focusing on evaluating tools such as Google Cardboard and getting ready to implement it in our teaching activities.

Our current education system which is rigid belonged to Persia. Such rigid system has been often killing innovation and creativity and producing conformists, though some positive outcomes are also there.

Most of the innovation in the world has come from motivated students outside the classroom who learned in an unstructured environment. Knowledge and Education are very important and such innovators did learn – not necessarily in structured environment.

They followed their passion and instinct. They did what they wanted to do and in the process learned and earned. This is called democracy. Our ultimate goal is to truly democratise education.
